On the North Shore, parents are given educaticnal options other than the public school system. The following is a short description of some of those options; contact the school for more information. Self-motivation is a key word at the North Store Montessori (925-1437), Lighthouse Montessori (922-7215) or West Vancouver Montessori (922-7454). wre The Vancouver Waldorf School, located at 2725 St. Christopher’s Rd. in Lynn Valley, is an indepen- dent, co-educational, non-sectarian school that offers a broad, balanc- ed curriculum. Opened in North Vancouver in 1971, it is one of 500 schools around the world based on the ap- proach to education first introduc- ed by Rudolf Steiner, Austrian Montessori teachers believe that children experience ‘sensitive periods’’ within their development. preschools. Although each preschoo! is run independently of the others, they share a common philosophy of allowing each child to work at his or her own pace in an atmosphere that is stimulating, yet maintains structure and order. In the three-year program, childre: from about the ages of three thrcugh six are encouraged to progress from one set of tasks to another at their own initiative, rather than according to a set timetable. Typical activities available to children in a Mcatessori preschool are music, French, tasks that foster reading, writing and mathematical ability, practical skills and games to stimulate their sensory awareness. Montessori teachers believe that children experience ‘‘sensitive periods’”’ within their development during which a child is particularly receptive to learning specific skills, and they strive to recognize these periods and satisfy the learning needs presented by them. For more information about Montessori preschools, call Le Petit Montessori (980-7973), Gatehouse Montessori School a philosopher and educator, over 70 years ago. According to school literature, “the distinguishing feature of Waldorf education is the teacher’s urderstanding of man’s inner nature and the development and awakening of this nature in the child. The child’s development grows from an early sense of wonder to intellectual awakening and a thirst for knowledge.” For more information about the Vancouver Waldorf School, which currently has 250 students enrolled from preschool through to Grade 12, call 985-7435. * wx Children — or adults — who are having trouble mastering any aca- demic subject might benefit from the individualized learning offered at Sylvan Learning Centre at #210-1217 Lonsdale Ave. Sylvan’s philosophy is that problems are very likely to result at advanced skill levels if one or more basic skills have not been mastered. In its 60-minute classes, Sylvan isolates where the basic skill gap is, then not only works to give the child the knowledge that he or she needs, but to improve his or her self-confidence and willingness to learn as well. The length of each individual’s program is determined by the stu- dent’s progress within a time frame and advancement made within the structure of the program outline. For more information, call the Sylvan Learning Centre at 985- 6811. kan Having opened in September 1984 offering Grades 1 through 8 to 221 students, Collingwood Schoo! in West Vancouver has now expanded to encompass 540 stu- dents in Grades 1 through 12. The private school, run by the North Shore Independent School Society, recently completed a $6.5 million expansion that included a new library, science labs, a lecture theatre, competition gymnasium, music studio and five academic domains, each containing five rooms. Students are expected to work towards a high level of achieve- ment, and are given opportunities to learn in areas of the arts, sciences and athletics. Uniforms are worn, and standards of con- duct are high.
