They’re called transformers, robots that can transform into cars, boats, aircraft, and a host of other assorted mechanical gadgets, and back again into robots. While today’s children are a part of this toy “‘transformation’’ gen- eration, there is another kind of transformation out there, and it doesn’t have anything to do with cobats. Caroline Sutherland, who bills herself as a relaxation therapist, is a leading expert on the transfor- mation generation. But just what is this new generation? ‘It includes those of us of all ages who are seeking a way to transform our old methods of cop- ing with life into a new way of meeting the challenges of living, involving major changes in rela- tionships, the environment, politi- cal, educational, medical and eco- nomic realities,’’ says Sutherland. She has built a career teaching the transformative process — or New Age process, as it is called — through her books, tapes and presentations. Sutherland concedes the New Age concept is not new at all. “It’s a distillation of ancient concepts, ... eastern religions and western thought. (But) permeating the whole thing is a new experience By SURJ RATTAN News Reporter we haven’t experienced before," said Sutherland. She adds that a lot of people making changes in their lives may not realize that they are undergo- ing a New Age experience. “Where their fives might be touched by the New Age experi- ence are in the areas of holistic health or alternative medicine. The New Age has very much permeated the food and health industries,’ said Sutherland. Sutherland was introduced to the New Age experience in 1975, when, following a sports injury, she signed up for a yoga class. “Yoga seemed pretty far out then. | was a Shaughnessy house- wife, mother of two and a wife of an executive. The yoga instructor referred us to an obscure bookstore on Fourth Ave., to which I went in my practical Ports dress and pearl earrings,’’ said Sutherland. “I pushed open the door to the sound of chimes and the smell of incense, and saw a gaunt, bearded fellow with sad eves standing behind the counter. The New Age is a concern and love for the planet and people feel com- pelled to express and act upon that.’” Her venture into the New Age experience has resulted in a major change in her personal and business life.
