But gaining ground in cycling and holding her pesition in runn- ing, she recorded a sixth-place finish against some of the world’s top triathletes. “I was shocked I did that well considering the competition,’ said Keogh, 22, 2 serious triathlon competitor from 1981 to 1986 before giving up the running snd swimming portions of the event. “T’m quite happy.’ As the B.C. road racing charapion, the North Vancouvcrite regained lost ground during the cycling leg of the race, putting her in a healthy spot for the run to the finish line. “It was a ict of pain,’’ she seid Thursday of the race, her first triathlon in about two years. ‘‘It hurt a lot — I don’t want to do it again unless I put in a lot of training.’’ Roughriders trample team THE ROUGHRIDERS rode over the Terminators in Gordon Stur- tridge League football action last weekend, with the Flag I division teams playing to a 19-6 final. Hockey league calis on clippers THE NORTE Vancouver Minor Hockey Association is once again participating in a fund-raising project to collect UPC symbols from Kraft products. Local residents wishing to support minor hockey can clip the products’ bar symbols and save them to occasionally send to the association. . For each symbol remitted to Kraft by the association, the local organization will receive 10 cents to go toward its various expenses. Raising $1,000 last year, the association is aiming for $2,000 this year. As well gs supporting minor hockey through this fund-raising program, Kraft is also sponsoring a cross-Canada initiation pro- gram to provide introductory instructions (o first-time coaches and standardize bazic skill. Drop boxes were available at an assortment of retail outlets last season, but this year the association asks that the symbols be mail- ed to: Kraft/NVMHA, c/o Bruce Russel!, 1031 Forest Hills Dr., North Vancouver, V7R 1N6. Senior tennis players sought NORTH SHORE seniors interested in playing tennis can get in- volved with an association now forming to promote recreational .tennis among people 55 yesrs and older. “Seniors wishing to play tennis year-round would be able to participate even though they might lack partners, opponents, facil- itfes or club affiliation,” association president Terry Field explain- ed. . Following a preliminary meeting in August, organizers found 130 seniors interested in the idea; now, organizers are trying to reach other seniors who might want to join the association. Wate SPORTS Local team goes to Canadian cup IT HAS been 20 years since a North Vancouver team represented B.C. in the Canadian Challenge Cup, tnd 40 years since a North Vancoaver team won it. But North Vancouver’s Norvan Soccer Club ANAF Unit 45 — this year’s B.C. representative to the tournament — hopes to end that long dry spell. ‘*We should do very well,”’ team spokesman Pat Morten predicted of Norvan’s chances in the Saska- toon tournament this weekend. ‘I expect we'll be playing in the final on Monday.”’ Beating 1987 B.C. representative Queen’s Park Rangers 3-2 in the provincial cup in May, Norvan qualified to carry B.C. hopes to the tournament. Expected to play key parts in the Norvan drive for the championship are forwards Desi Webster and Paul McCullem, whose efforts will be bolstered by goalkeeping from Dan Crouch and Gord Arckerman.
