By STEPHEN BARRINGT' News Reporter Singing since she was a youngster, the North Vancouver- born entertainer is moving into the limelight with a varied series of folk, jazz, rock and offbeat con- certs. “In 1985 1 started looking at the direction I wanted my music to take,”’ says the 33-year-old singer. I knew that I wanted to do some- thing different.” For Arntzen, exploring her musical roots was like staring at herself in the looking glass, hence her . recent album aptly titled “Woman in the Mirror. “T really had to step outside myself,”? she says, breaking into a few verses of the album’s. title track. ‘‘That process was similar to looking at a mirror. . . “And that person in the mirror was myself,’’ she says in explana- tion, Soul-searching brought to light -Jall that Arntzen holds musically . dear — deep lyrics of folk, quiet sophistication of jazz and pure fun of rock and roll. I wanted to be writing music people can dance to, that moves them.’’ Some of the lesser-known facts about the singer are two same-day concerts on opposite sides of the Pacific and a seven-year stint play- ing the French Horn. In the summer of 1985, Arntzen was performing at Expo 85 in Japan on the same day the Lynn Valley native was to appear at Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival. After her four Expo shows, she jumped in a car and was whisked to the airport where she hopped an I1-hour flight to Seattle, arriving just before the event. “And I did it just so I could in- clude it on my resume,”’ Arntzen jokes. The discipline she has learned through playing the French horn has so far served her well. “Tt was really good training,” she recalls. “Pursuing what I’m doing now requires a fot of discipline — discipline is one of the things (I learned).’’ As with: most new albums, a video to support Arntzen’s new release is in the works. Until Feb. 21, listeners can see Arntzen’s ‘zany’ face as she per- forms with The Crimpolines. From Feb. 24 to 28 she sings with band Take The Money And Run. Renamed from its earlier handle of Commercial Drive, Take The Money And Run is Arntzen’s band of some of the hottest players on the underground circuit.
