The video uses professional ac- tors with children from the ages of four to late teens who portray typ- ical day-to-day hassles, Schroeder says. “The video has been very suc- cessful because people can identify with the vignettes,’’ she said, Schroeder said her Active Parenting course makes use of video technology ii the course’s six 14-hour segments. After viewing the vignettes of typical family situations, partici- pants discuss the situations and review chapters in a detailed handbook, she says. The Active Parenting course was created in Atlanta, Georgia, by Dr. Michael Popkin, a child and fami- ly counselor. “GROWING According to Dr. Popkin, “Disciplining a child or teen oc- curs within the context of a rela- tionship. If that relationship is good the discipline works; if the relationship is not good the discipline simply produces addi- tional conflict."” Dr. Popkin said Active Paren- ting is not psychotherapy, but rather a review of basics that every parent already knows. “There is no dwelling on who did what and why, but rather a positive move-ahead promise that it’s never too late to evolve change.’’ The handbook includes chapters such as Keeping the Lines Open: Avoiding Communication Blocks, Freedom and the Limits to Freedom, Parenting and Anger, and ABCs of Behavior. Schroeder said she would like to see between eight and 10 parents per course. The first session begins sometime in mid-September. What makes this parenting course unique is the use of video.
