Getting your home ready for winter

Button up and batten down: winter's blowin’ this way. And we all know we're in for five months (well. four months and three weeks) of dreary, bleary drizzle.

With occasional wind-driven rain. . ‘

Winter's as hard on your home as it is on your disposition. So make things easier all ‘round —especially when it comes time to pay those winter heating bills — :
by making a litle extra effort now.

Follow the checklist given below. to make sure your home is well buuoned up for winter. And keep this list handy for next year: winter's sure to come around again.

OUTSIDE INSIDE
© Clean the dead leaves und general debris out of the eavestroughs, drains and guuers, © Check weuther-stipping around doors and windows, Repair or replace where necessary.
© Spread newspapers on concrete basement floors, Newspaper makes excelent

© Have your chimney and furnace cleaned: change
your furnace filter and check your fireplace
damper for drafts.
© Re-arrange your furniture to make best use of
warm areas —- such as around the fireplace—
and to avoid drafts.
® Add a bright spot of color to every room. Flowers. * Lo,
cushions or a colorful wall hanging: they all help ‘ L
to ‘spring up" a room. a

© Turn off outside water connections.

© Empty garden hoses and bring them inside
where they won't freeze.

@ Dig up all the dead plants and flowers in your
yard: plant daffodil or tulip bulbs in their plaice
and think how cheerful your yard will look
come spring!

@ Install a bird feeder in the back yard... winter's
a tough time for birds too.
