The Park and Tilford
property which was turned
down by the City Council
for a Shopping Centre is a
prime example of why we
should have amalgamated
with the District many years
ago. .

We all know that a shopp-
ing mall will be: built near
the Second Narrows in the
near future and I’m sure had
we been amalgamated and
worked together as one

council the mall would have
gone through.

The property can not be
maintained by the city as a
scenic Garden - the District
is not interested in a joint
venture - so what will hap-
pen? The District will allow
one to be built and the city
will lose the amount of taxes
the centre would have
generated. Again it’s a case
of the two councils working
against cach other rather
than as one council working

to the benefit of the whole
area.

There are some members
of your City Council who
belicve if they close their
eyes to a situation or pro-
blem and just vote NO the
situation or problem will go
away.

It will go away all right - it
will go to the District and
they will receive all the tax
income and benefits.

Unions must make
unpopular decisions

Union, and past member of
‘two Ontario unions, . I've
observed the democratic
process at work in both the

dispersal of funds.
With unions as with gov-
ernments, there are going to
be unpopular decisions as to
where and on what the funds
are to be spent, but these
decisions are made by
elected officials, .and as
president of a political
pressure group Mr. Brown
shouldn’t have any problem

advising Mr. Lavigne on
how. to get his desired results
from within the democratic
structure of his union.
However if Mr. Lavigne is
successful under the Charter
of Rights, would it follow
that individual taxpayers
could put forward a case
directing their tax dollars to
the causes of their choice.
