New threat to free speech Dear Editor: Elections Canada recently released the amounts spent by federal political parties during the last election. The PCs spent about $6.4 million; the liberals spent $6.3 million and the NDP spent $4.7 million. In the past, these political parties. and government bureaucrats have tried to - justify muzzling citizens’ groups during elections through spending prohibi- tions because they feared such groups could “buy” elections. - What does actual experi- ence show, however? While the two major par- ties spent about the same, the Liberals were soundly horsewhippet! by the elec- torate. * In 1980, although the PCs actually outspent the Liberals by about 16%, or $600,000, Joc Clark was defeated. : draperies by S. Laursen During elections, it’s ideas that really matter, fun- damentally, not the amount spent to put them across. This notion was recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court when it struck down as unconstitutional a law which limited spending by citizens’ groups in U.S. presidential campaigns. These two facts should be born in mind by our MPs, particularly those sitting on the House of Commons | “EN.
