OW THAT PRIME MINISTER

i TRUDEAU has wisely stepped aside, it

might be possible to contemplate the coming
federal election with a rational mind.

The desire to be rid of the
man had become a national
fetish.

Pierre Trudeau has been
prime minister so long that
some young people eligible to

- vote for the first time can
remember no other prime
minister except Joe Blink, if
that counts.

Trudeau has cast a shadow
over my entire generation.

In a way, he was a gust of
flower power. The media
picked up hungrily on all the
hippie stuff and created an
atmosphere in which a guy
like Trudeau suited the ap-
petite of the times.

It seemed, like, cosmic
when he picked up Maggie.
And dressed in all those
robes. It was only briefly,
when he fell from power, that
his image melted away. The
man standing there apologiz-
ing to his fellow Liberals in
Montreal was a coy, utterly
self-infatuated bragging brat.

There had been another
glimpse of Trudeau that
registered rather nastily in my
mind. It was his macho just-

Atlantic and Pacific fisheries,

toxic waste shipments, clean-
ing up the Great Lakes, and,
above all, acid rain, Trudeau
was a complete dud.

We gained a cumbersome
and unworkable Charter of
Rights but lost 10,000 lakes
while Trudeau tinkered with
fine points of force majeure.

Trudeau. As you so quaintly
