It was an exciting civic
campaign. Now the ex-

citement is over and the hard
work begins. I look forward
to it.

I want to join the other
candidates in thanking you,
the North Shore News, the
people who worked for me
and gave their unswerving
support and those who voted
for me. It was four weeks of
stimulating effort which gave
me the opportunity to meet
new people, make new
friends and become aware of
some of the problems that
we must solve together. _

As you 1 know, one of the
prime recreational assets of -
the North Shore is_ the
Baden-Powell Trail which
runs for over 30 kilometers
from Deep Cove to Hor-
seshoe Bay, travérsing both
of your municipalities along
the way. Some will ‘recall
that it was constructed by
the Boy Scouts as a Cen-
tennial. project in 1967. My |
wife and I have beén over
every segment of this trail,
having hiked the last one —

Mountain Highway to
Skylitie Drive on the
weekend.

While the trail is still
passable there is an urgent
need for maintenance and

crossing of Mosquito Creek
has been washed out for
more than one year. There is
no section of this facility that
is not in need of work.

It seems to me that this

would be an ideal project for

the recently... instituted
Federal-Provincial program
to supplement | | unem-
ployment. insurance and
create some useful work that
would not normally be done.
It has been reported. that a
private organization such as
the Mountaineering Club
may be interested in acting
as a sponsor ‘to enable this
work to proceed: If so, it
would be an excellent in-
tiative and should be sup-
ported. If not, there would
be merit in the two

_ Municipalities assuming a

sponsorship role. Another
possible option would be for
the project sponsorship to be
assumed by GVRD Parks
because the trail is essen-
tially a regional asset.

May I urge that this o
portunity for renewal of
Baden-Powell Trail not be
missed.
