BILL QUINTER An original member of the Rapp coaching staff who came to B.C. in 1977, Bill Quinters’ association with the CFL dates back some 20 years. His CFL career Started as a player with Ottawa in 1962, where he spent four seasons and won EFC All-Star honours at linebacker in 1964. Moving to the coaching ranks, he was the Offensive Line Coach at Indiana State (1968), and then spent four years at the University of Pittsburgh. He returned to Canada in 1973 as aie defensive line/linebackers coach with Toronto, and moved West to become the defensive co ordinator with Calgary in 1976. The following year he joined the Lions, where for the first four seasons he was the Offensive Line Coach. Last year saw a change in role as he took over coaching the Defensive Line. Quinter also heads up the clinic and _ local development programs, Canadian scouting, and sits as a Director of the B.C. Lions and in the Canadian Football League for “Rube” Berry, the outgoing native of Oklahoma, who coaches the running backs and line- backers. From his start as a High School coach, Berry became the Offensive Co- ordinator at Fort Scott J.C. in Kansas in 1963. Two seasons later he took over as Head Coach at Sterling College, Kansas, then joined the staff at Southwest Missouri State in 1967 as Defensive Co-ordinator. The following year he accepted the Head Coaching job at Missouri Southern, then returned ‘home’ four years later as the Head Coach at North Eastern Oklahoma. His seven year tenure there ended with his decision to join the Lions’ staff pnor to the 1979 season. The soft-spoken native of Missouri has given the club new respect in this area, especially after last years two playoff games in Winnipeg and Edmonton. His football career, as a player then a coach, started in his home state, at the University of Missouri. After four years playign defensive back, he joined the coaching staff of Dan Devine in 1965, working with the secondary. He later coached the defensive line, linebackers, Maney Place Tillicum Mall 381 4665 (Victorta) and was the defensive co- ordinator prior to leaving for Vancouver. He and coach Rapp were both members of the Missouri staff for several years, and he left in 1977 to rejoin with Rapp in Van- ‘couver. Today Vince, wife Cathy, young son Ryan and daughter Shannon, a very recent addition to the Tobin family, make their home in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby. John Herrera joined the B.C. Lions staff exactly one year ago, on the opening weekend of the 1981 training camp, assuming the responsibility for putting together a complete player personnel system for the club. Spending a good part of the year on the road, Herrera scouts both the Canadian and U.S. colleges as well as the NFL training 9 - A Feature Section of the North Shove News - June 9, 1982 The assistants camps, and his work has given the coaching staff the most comprehensive player listing and rating system ever. John played’ college football at Cal-Davis, then joined the staff of the Oakland Raiders im the player personnel area. He later went on to positions as the Player Personnel man with both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and _ the Washington Redskins. He completed the circle when he returned home to rejoin the Raiders, and was a part of their 1981 Super Bowl triumph. Married during the past off-season, John and wife Lesley make their home in North Van- couver. JERR Y BRUNER Jerry Bruner, formerly the Offensive Co-ordinator at the University of Texas-El Paso, joins the Lions for the upcoming 1982 Canadian Football League season. A native of Evansville, Indiana, Bruner is a graduate of Florida State University, and did his post- graduate work at Kansas State University in the field of Secondary Education. He began his college coaching career at Kansas State as the Assistant Of- fensive Lime coach in 1968 and 1969. He moved to the staff at West Virginia University as the Offensive Line Coach in 1975, where he spent five seasons. In 1976, Bruner returned to his Alma Mater, Florida State, where as the offensive line coach he opened the holes for running back Larry Key, with whom he is re- united in Vancouver. In 1979, he joined the staff at Louisiana State University, before taking the post as Offensive Co-ordinator at Texas-El Paso last year. With a total of 14 years major college coaching experience on the offensive line, Bruner will join the Lions’ staff immediately to begin preparations for the 1982 season. The majority of the offensive units he has worked with during his career have been pass oriented, and Bruner is confident that the transition to the increasingly pass will be a onented CFL smooth one.
