MORE ABOUT CRUISING Learning bridge on the high seas Even if you don’t play contract bridge, you'll probably appreciate this story. Bridge score sheets are divided into sections labelled “We” (the score- keeper and partner) and J | trayel- wise y Barbara McCreadie “They” (the opponents). I have a marvellous memento of our cruise on the Island Princess - a scorecard where the “We” is the famous champion Alfred Sheinwold and ME. If I were not writing a travel column, Id never have had the courage to approach him and ask to play as his partner. Never! Although he’s such a nice man, he'd probably have done it anyway. I'd like to be able to say that it was my fantastic bridge skills that had him approach me for a game but we have to keep this column honest. Nervous? Not at ali - at least Freddy Sheinwold wasn't! 1] was practically spitting razorblades. And, if the actual playing of the hands didn’t make me fall apart, the presence of Brian, sitting on the arm of my chair and criticizing my bidding nearly did me in. For golfers, imagine you and Arnold Palmer teeing off with your spouse caddying. The master, himself, is a charmer. He’s got a wealth of stories - both on bridge and on his role as an officer in the code section of the O.S.S. during World War II. During the cruise, Freddy conducted bridge classes most mornings. He has a silky voice, a disarmingly quiet manner and a razor wit. As a bridge opponent, if you think of him as a “Silver Fox” and yourself as a plump chicken you might have the right slant. Yes, it was Sheinwold who was instrumental in catching the famous Itahan “Blue Team” cheating in world competition by playing footsies under the table. He gave us a graphic demon- stration of how it was done. I asked him about the famous movie actor Omar Shariff, who, with Charles Goren by-lines a popular bridge column. (They don't write it themselves). During the war, Sheinwold played bridge at a private club in Egypt. Years later, Omar Shariff asked him, “Do you remember a little boy watching every hand?” The boy was Shariff. “I had to say that I remembered, not to hurt his feelings. Frankly, I didn't remember a thing about it.” I purchased a copy of Sheinwold’s “Five Weeks to Winning Bridge” and took it to him to be autographed. We won trophies for the best overall record in the regular duplicate game. Here again, I must be honest. It wasn't that we were such hot-shots - but the competition wasn't all that great, either. If you're a bridge (and Winnie the Pooh will be there! Balloons for the kids! Hourly prizes dra wn! cruising) enthusiast, Alfred Sheinwold will be doing more bridge cruises for Princess so check it out with a travel agent. I think that the next one will be on the South Seas either to or from Australia.
