we A7-Wednesday, June 25, 1980 - North Shore News mailbox Wants to know all about crime Dear Editor: I was deeply interested in Mr. O'Neill's letter on crime. Fortunately I live in a relatively peaceful neigh- bourhood where the only disturbance of peace is the odd twit with a noisy stereo or some wild maniac on a motorcycle. However, those of us who have access to statistics know that we are in the midst of an unprecedented crime wave of arson, thefts and related offences, such as vandalism in which those involved show utter con- tempt for — shall we say? — the sane persons in our society. Throughout all this, the police, the courts, and the law-abiding public emerge in a bad light for many reasons: 1. The police do not prevent In praise of nurses Dear Editor: Florence Nighungale born into a wealthy family and later, having an independent income of her own, had no conception of what it meant to live ona pittance. She encouraged middle and upper class girls anxious to escape the intolerable boredom of their lives, to enter the new profesmon of crime and have lost touch with people. They decline to leave their cars and get back to basics i.e. patrolling streets, talking to the public, getting to know people, correcting problems at an early stage etc. In general, returning to the concepts as envisaged by Sir Robert Peel, the founder of police as we know them. 2. The courts will have to return to a system of penaities that will act as a deterrent and warm those vicious criminals such as drug pushers, the violent ones who terrorize, the mental midgets who commit senseless acts that their days are numbered. In_ short throw away the key. The far north needs developing and labour camps in those areas for those hardened criminals nursing. They had families to return to if ill and usually a legacy for their old age. Nurses completely dependent on their scanty wages were in a different position. The tradition that nurses should be underpaid is utterly unfair now such a high standard of training is required. The nurse looks after the patient for hours, the doctor MP congratulates the Dear Editor May I extend my congratulahons to you and the staff of the North Shore News the occasion of being awarded first prize for your outdoor ‘poster during on the recent Newspaper Promotion Awards Com. petition. As we all know on the North Shore, the News has served us well and this award is further proof of the quality Double Burger and Fries who are a menace to us all would soon solve the problem, perform useful exchange for lodging. 3. The public will have to protest more, demand the right to walk the streets, at night, even in Ambleside without being in fear. The public will have to con- tinuously contact the police about crime or suspected crime without being afraid to do so. As they say in the States, “Rat ona rat”. In conclusion, the time has arrived to say “enough is enough”. To say to all that B.C. is a beautiful place and it is not going to be terrorized, and tarnished by these useless, unfit-to-live misfits who would, if they had their way, destroy us all. work in board and sees them for minutes. People spend huge sums on liquor, drugs, gambling, travel and cars and politically, on nuclear and conventional armaments. Sooner or later everyone becomes dependent on a nurse for freedom from pain, for recovery from illness, or is cased to their final end. Freda Handford West Vancouver NEWS and success of the paper. I, like Terrence O'Neill, want all the misery of crime statistics published in detail. I want to know the truth, I want to know how many crimes there are, I want to know how many are in- vestigated, I want to know how many are solved, I want to know how many are arrested, I want to know how many are convicted. It is our right to have these | facts, at least weekly. The mames of the judges and sentences should also be disclosed. However, perhaps unlike Terrence O'Neill, although he is speaking with tongue in cheek, I look forward to the day when I read, “No crime on the North Shore this week, and only a handful in B.C.” IT STARTS. I will be happy in the knowledge that finally reason has prevailed, and once again we have a society © to be proud of, and one which will be the envy of the world.
