A2-Sunday News, May 18, 1980 Lawyers keeping eye on Lonsdale blasting FROM PAGE A1 daily work program. Dillingham met with North Van City Council last week, following a letter from lawyers representing the Talisman Towers Strata Corporation warning that remedial action and com- pensation might be sought. The contractors agreed to bring forward the time of their latest blasting by an hour to 9 p.m. and to explore methods of lessening the shockwaves from the blasts experienced by neighbors. Talisman residents are among a steady stream of neighbors who have com- plained to Dillingham, the City and the North Shore News about the effects of the blasts which occur twice daily Monday to Friday. DISRUPTION Thew concerns are over the disruption of their lifestyles because of the noise, the tremors that shake their homes and the resulting nsks of structural damage. West Vancouver lawyers Johnson McCrae and Company, representing Talisman, had asked that blasting should cease at 8 p.m., although strata manager John Woolcock later told the News he felt the 9 p.m. time agreed was a reasonable compromise. 4 1 oe oe tet 9 on tt dt vot 7 a ee ten argh PREPARING ANOTHER BLAST in excavation work for a new drydock facility in He said of the strata corporation's reason for retaining lawyers: “They just wanted to make everyone aware that if any damage did occur we already have a lawyer guiding us along and are well aware and quite serious about the matter.” Both the City and Ditlingham are replying to the lawyers with details of the modifications Dillingham has agreed to. Manager of Dillingham's marine division Hugh Tucker told the News the action of bringing forward the final blast of the day will involve paying workers extra for working in prime time. He also said the company has been expenmenting with br North Vancouver, this worker (left) on a Dillingham Corporation drilling rig holds a charge which will blast glacial till so it can be excavated by a clamshell dredge. Tucker added that the inshore blasting is in its final slages and tremors should lessen as work progresses. “We're trying to get the worst of it over first,” he said. Neighbors will have a break from the _ blasting during the whole of June and the first half of July, on the orders of government fisheries officers concerned about spawning. After that the work will resume, probably until the end of the year. Though everyone acknowledges that the blasting is disruplve to neighbors who feel the tremors twice daily, Tucker says it is unavoidable in order to carry out the $10.2 million preparation § for arrival of the drydock being constructed tn Japan. THE ONLY WAY He says of the necessity for the blasting: “It 1s the only way we or any other contractor could have tendered on the work. “There is a job to be done and we tendered under compeuuon and are trying to be as reasonable as we can. We have a schedule to maintain but at the same time are not going to be irresponsible citizens.” Mayor Jack Loucks tends {Oo agree. His primary concern is to ensure that no neighboring buildings are put in jeopardy by the work and feels the inconvenience experienced by people living nearby is a fact of life dunng such a project. Meanwhile, he says, Dillingham is taking con- Siant seismic readings and assures the council that the shock levels of the blasts are not sufficient to damage any buildings. He points out that the company was required to take out insurance for the work and = suggests that anyone feeling they have suffered damage from the blasts should contact Dillingham. Loucks says of the company’s work: “I think they have made an effort but we are keeping a watch on it and checking it out. “We hope the steps that have been taken will relieve the concerns of some people,” he says, although he acknowledges: “But we know many people will not be happy until the blasting stops.” FIGURE 1 SLIMMING STUDIOS Slim Down & Firm Up with FIGURE 1 FIGURE 1 specializes in o European method of cellulite elimination and weight and inch loss. i'm doing it!
