It’s a straight for- ward third-person action adventure title, mission based, with a few RPG elements thrown in for good measure. Essentially you play a time- travelling commando sent to Earth’s past in an effort to tiwart the machinations of an evil alien enemy hell-bent on harvesting the planet’s popu- lace. But that’s not a bad thing in this case for as you trudge back and forth from town to town you’rc encouraged to hot wire various vehicles — some of which are heavily armed — and joyride your way around the map. Truthfully, I spent an inor- dinate amount of time tearing up friendly neighbourhood rose gardens and “accidental- ly” mowing over the occa- sionai civilian. Oops. Book parallels 12-hour TV series on 20th century i The Century by Peter Jennings and Todd Brewster. Doubleday, New York, 606 pages, $85.00. HOW do you sum up the past one hundred years? A century which has seen unprecedented change and growth. One that began with man’s first flight when the Wright brothers flew the Wright Flyer in 1904 and ts ending with space shuttle launches becoming so frequent that it takes a senior citizen as a passenger to generate new interest. Peter Jennings, Todd Brewster and the stalf on ABC News have risen wo that challenge of sharing the colossal amount of information available. For six years they have worked cowards this goal and now the fruits of their labours can be shared by all. The Century is dye companion book to 2 six-part, 12-hour televi- sion series. The 606-page book is filled with eyewitness accounts to every important event that is reported on. Hundreds of pho- tographs, many published for the first time accompany these per- sonal stories. It is these accounts that bring the book to life. The Century is divided into sections where important themes are brought to the forefront, such as Starmy Weather: 1929 - 1936, which features the impact of the Grea Depression and the Dust Bowl years. The book goes far beyond providing hard facts, it provides insight. Filled with quotes, like this one from JFK., “We wouldn’t have had a prayer without that gadget.” (JFK speaking of the role of television in his 1960 campaign for presi- dent.) This book is a treasure that can be shared with anyone. The clock will move forward into a new century at the end of this year and we can feel fortunate that there is a record of the past one so readily available. is surprisi The Sony Group recently anneunced a 17,000 job cur to take place over the next four years as part of a “sween- ing” restructuring. Sony plans to c¢lirninate 15 manufacturing facilities around the world, reducing to 55 by 2003.
