4 - Sunday, March 8, 1998 — North Shore News Employer vindicated |. From paae 1 The woman's allegations snowballed and Hutchinso:’s headaches quickly mul- plied. Within a year, the woman Jaunched a claim with the Workers Compensation Board, filed a complaint with rhe West Vancouver police department which later led to criminal charges of sexual assault, and another complaint with the human rights council. The human rights council allegations against Hutchinson included claims that he: @ forced her to have sex with him at his West Vancouver hame in fall of 1989; @ he groped her ina back accounting office of the hotel in October 1991. Wi said he wanted to have sex with her in his car while the nwo were mapping out a route for a charity fun run in North Vancouver in July 1993. Various allegations of inappropriate comments allegedly made by Hurchinson were also included in the complaint. For his part, Hutchinson has denied all the allegations against him. In the aftermath of his vindication, Hutchinson said he has never done any- thing wrong and is sorry his family and name were forced to live under the dark cloud of the public’s presumptien of his guilt. The hardest hit was his voungest son, a 13-year-old attending a Nocth Vancouver high school. “My son at 1] years old was in a fight every day mving to defend his dad over this,” said Hutchinson. “My mother dicd three months before this thing went to trial (in B.C. Supreme Court). Hutchinson said he went our with the woman, a hotel emplovee, once in 1989 shortly after he broke up with his fiance. He said the outing resulted in sex, but it was consensual. “I was single and on occasion would take out a staff member. Today, | wouldn't consider it.” said Hutchinson. “Having said that, f never harassed anvy- body and I never assaulted anybody.” The province’s highest court and, more recently, the human rights council, agree, bur defending himself in both forums has cost him over $200,000 in legal fees. Those are unrecoverable, but at least the 50-vear-old hotelier has his good name back. “You could imagine being charged with this stuff,” said Hutchinson, “Allofir © KEN Hutchinson smiles in his Avalon Hotel office after a recent human rights council decision’: dismissed a former employee's complaint of sexual assault against him. in che paper — it was prerty devastating.” Council Meeting Agenda March 9 - 7:00 p.m. Council Matters . 1.
