16 — Sunday, December 8, 1996 — North Shore News Priest blesses new co Departing counciller praises staff By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer EMOTIONS over- flowed in a crowded North Vancouver District hall Monday as, not one, but two council meetin marked the changing of the municipal guard. Mayor-clect Don Bell broke with tradition and orga- nized the evening so that Mayor Murray Dykeman FOR DES. could chair his ast full council mecting and address the com- munity as mayor one lest time before stepping down. Dvkeman then closed his council meeting, Judge William T. Rodgers swore in the new councii members and Mayor Don Bell took the chair 20 years after being sworn in as mayor for the first time. His first words: “I'm ba- aack.” The format also gave councillors Jim Cuthbert and Pam Goldsmith-Jones one last chance at the public micro- phone. Goldsmith-Jones thanked Dykeman for a laid-back lead- ership style that allowed “new people to try new things.” She spoke highly of district staff. T DE 1996 E. Kelth Rd. Cuthbert said one of his biggest rewards during six years on council was finding out “a great deal about people and what people have as their greatest values.” An emotional Bell stopped several times to compose him- self as he struggled to intro- duce the priest who had blessed him as mayor 20 years ago. Father Ron Barnes got a big laugh from the friendly crowd when he prefaced his uncii prayer with the instruction “I want vou to watch carefully when I bless the new council and if they don’t dissolve in a puff of smoke you'll know they are all nght.” They didn’t dissolve, but the district taxpavers may wait three years before deciding whether council is “all right.” LIGHTING & ACCESSORIES SALE Pre-Christmas Clearance © | 50% or: | ‘Free Lutron. “over $300 |: 845 TERMINAL AVE. * 687-0656 Fax: 685-0746 eres ngideasTokight.
