Maybe it’s because these not-so-edible treats, which go on display at the Ferry - Building Gallery on Tuesday, were not created by Mother Nature but by members of the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Arts. The organizers of the | exhibition are calling it High Fibre Diet: A Feast of Textile Art. The 33 works on display were crafted by 30 talented fabric artists, several of whom reside on the North Shore. Accompanying the faux delectables at the banquet table will be a variety of items that . while not so edible are just as luscious. There's " scarves and jackets and tapestries. Gioves and gourds and collages. Some are whimsical, like Rosalind Aylmer’s Feather Boa which is actually a beaded reptilian creation adorned with feathers that can be worn as a neckpiece. Others are’serious: Marcia Hetherington’s Dieting to Get Out makes a statement about society's preoccupation with weight. Some tell a story, like Robin Reid's Wearing . my Heart on my Sleeve, a silk naile tunic, hand-dyed in purple, blue and pink, with appliqué and hand-embroidered sayings like “Love is a friendship set to music.” Others set a tone through their eerie realism, like Carol Paley’s papier. miché Tassili Gourd or Hazel Rowley’s High Fibre Waffle of hand-made paper, papier maché and assorted fibres. As for the artists themselves, some make a living from their work, like weavers Kaija Rautiainen and Barbara Heller, who share a studio on Granville Island. Others view it as a hobby.
