Van Otters work, play hard NOW IN its 11th year, the West Van Otters Swim Club is succeeding in its goal to provide a recreational as well as competitive environment for young swimmers. “There is a strong social and family aspect to the club,’’ said Val Stephenson, mother of one of the swimmers. Along with competitions and the hours of training that lead up to them, the members hold soccer games, ski weekends, an annual bike trip and numerous skating parties, video nights and weiner roasts. A board of parent directors runs the club, : and oversees the annual operating budget of $90,000. Monthly dues are supplemented by fund raisers, and each member is expected to raise a certain amount of money through such events as swim-a-thons, meat Sales, fruit sales, Entertain- ment book sales and car washes. Despite the time spent on social and fund-raising activities, coaches Richard Gate, Ann Jones, K.C. Emerson and Danielle Russell have managed to turn out a number of provincial and national champions. Included in this list of champs are Kathryn Pellett and Claire Mat- thews, who are both current holders of national times. Previous members of the Otters who hold national times are Sara Frisby, Julie Lavender, lan Hylands and Sandy Melody. The club began in 1977 with approximately 90 members, following Rita Metcalf*s presentation to West Vancouver Couneil i in which she petition- ed for an indoor swimming club. Goals of the club that were established at its inception were to promote ’ physical and psychological well-being, teach children organizational - skills, create, opportunities for the swimmers to travel and receive public recognition, and allow boys and girls to participate equally i ina team en- vironment. Since the club began, there have consistently been between 85 and 100 members who range from six to 17 years old, For more information on the club, call Nan Pellett, president, at 926-3448. a NOV VEMBER » SPECIALS - ~_TUNE-UP SPECIAL $30.95 $45.95 $49.95 4CYL..6CYL. 8 CYL.
