North Vancouver District Council agreed unanimously Monday to name the small park at the corner of Lynn Valley Road and. 29th Street after Arthur Smith. Smith was the NVYB director of music from 1954 to the year of his death in 1978. “Is been a long time coming. Pm very pleased.” his son Ron Smith told the News. Ron Smith is the Jongtime director of music for the NVYB junior hand. He credits North Vancouver District Coun. Ernie Crist for instigating the park dedication process in memory of his father, Crist was also instrumental in obtaining the title “Official Band of the City and District of North Vancouver” for the NVYB_ last year. Crist told council Monday that the park dedication is not only a fitting tribute to Arthur Smith but would also serve to raise the awareness of getting young people involved in music and the arts. Crist's two children were both members of the band. | Under Smith’s direction the NVYB, which was formerly known as the North Vancouver Schools Band. grew from eight to over 200 members. The band travelled all over the world and won many awards, including top) honors at the Canadian National Band Competition. first place for march- ing bands in the PNE and Klondike Days Parades and. first place at the Kiwanis Music Festival, Smith received a posthumous Distinguished Citizen Award from the district in [99T. As a general policy district parks are not renamed after people and new parks are named after their neighborhoods or adjacent street names. But small. locally used parks not presently named can be exempted from the policy. Coun. Don Bell suggested stall report on a suitable location for a pioneers park where a number of plaques could be placed commem- orating he community contribu tions of significant individuals. The NVYB has agreed to pay for a plaque to be placed in the Lynn Valley park in memory of Arthur Smith, Ron Smith is eager to hear from past band members who might be willing to help with the memoria do his father.
