After the shaking stops, check

for fires, gas leaks or any damage
to appliances or piping.
Tf you suspect there is damage,
turn off gas at the gas meter. If
there is no damage do not turn off
gas, you may need the heat.

If you smell gas, douse all fires,
do not use matches, do not operate
electrical switches. Open win-
dows, leave the building and shut
ofr the gas valve.

Do not use barbecues, camp
stoves or unvented heaters indoors.

your gas meter

Turn the gas valve at the gas
meter once, to the off position, do
not reopen it.

Remember that you do not need
to close the valve unless you

’ believe there is a gas leak, a fire,

or structural damage to the build-
ing.
Only qualified personnel
should reopen the valve and relight
appliances.

In the Los Angeles earthquake,
last January, over 150,000 gas cus-
tomers shut off their gas valves
unnecessarily (no leaks, no fires).

A smaif army of gas company
staff had to be brought in from
other centres to carry out the rigor-
ous and lengthy job of inspections
and relights. Some customers were
without gas service for a week or
more.
