Anyone knows that a blitz of the supermarket, buying fancy treats, takes a mean bite out of your food budget. Instead, start right now, buying a few luxuries each shopping trip. Check out your favorite recipes for entertaining and= stock up gradually on the expensive ingre- dients. Let’s consider some. make- ahead appetizers that freeze well. Two that I always count on for the holiday season are meatballs and small phylo pastries. Both are excellent keepers. If you freeze them loose and then bag, you can take out just as much as you need without having to thaw the whole parcel. : FREEZER PARTY MEATBALLS It’s much .easier if you bake these before. freezing. They can be heated on a. baking. sheet very quickly — no need to thaw. ‘1 tb. pork sausage meat (2 ib, lean ground beef 1% tsp. salt 1 tsp. ary mustard ¥2 tsp. alispice 3 eggs Ye. fine dry breadesumbs % c. finely sliced yreen onions Combine all ingredients and form into 1’ balls. Set on several cookie sheets (with rims) and bake at 375°F about 20 minutes. About halfway through cook- ing, stir them around a bit so they brown evenly. - 1 often wrap half of the meat- balls in % slice of very lean, thin-sliced bacon, secured with a toothpick. Here are a couple of quick dip- ping sauces you can (oss together while the meatballs reheat. RYE WHISKEY SAUCE This one comes from my friend Shirley Louie. Shirley puts equal amounts of: Ketchup . It's not difficult but the results are impressive. Phylo is sold in the frozen food section in one-pound lots.
