8 ~ Friday, October 9, 1992 ~ North Shore News MAILBOX Reject Yes threats and scare tactics An open letter to Brian Mulroney, Joe Clark, Michael Harcourt and honorable members of the House of Commons, the B.C. legislature aad othe legislatures of all the other provinces in Canada: On Oct. 26 of this year-you will be ashing me to apprave a series of agreements, reached carer this summer, by the prime minister and all of the premiers (to the ex- fent that they were all present all of the time). } reject your agreement and will vate No. However. simply voting No does aot afford me the oppor- tunity to tell you why and what J would like you to have ac- complished. Ergo, this letter. I speak only for myself; 1 am not a member of any committee, nor am | a member of any politi- val party, federal or provincial. Alihough {| speak only lor myself, | would wager any amount that the vast majority of B.C. residents agree with most of my concerns, and moreover, that the majority of Canadians, from wherever, also agree with much of what I have to say. Before | speak of specifics, let me offer a preamble regarding politics. The preamble is that ‘tin politics, perception is reality.”" Based on that tenet, and the faci that | hold Brian Mulroney in such low regard, | am amazed that our leaders would show such poor judgment as to offer me any agreement tainted with Mr. Mutroney’s biessing. Paraphrasing W.C. Fields, “anything Mr. Mulroney likes ‘can’t be all good."’ So there is the first problem. Now that the process of negaiiation ts complete, | amend the above to “anything Mr. Mulroney and Mr. Harcourt think is OK, probably isn‘t."” Referring back to my statement of amazement, perhaps I should reconsider. The case and relish with which this country's elected officials feed at the public trough (expenses. tax-free income, sub- sidized meals, pensions oh those pensions) indicate a lack of integrity that should, and does, supersede amazement. You all appear to do whatever is best for yourselves and the public be damned, J am threatened by you that dire consequences’ will follow a No vote. | reject your threats and scare tactics. We Canadians will pull through despite you. 1 am told that [ messed up the previous chance at renewing the Constitution (by 1, [ mean the country), [| assume you meant Meech Lake. I was never given the Opportunity to vote on the Meech Lake Accord. So before | even knew of any of the contents of this year’s agree- ment, you were fighting an uphill battle, even if it is an excellent agreement. However, B.C. is under- represented in the Commons and there is only a promise to look at the number in 1996. Quebec is given a guarantee of 25% of MPs regardless of future popuiation. | only recently heard thar P.E.f. also has a minimum guaraniee; if this is true it is also a violation of the principle of one man (or woman) one volte. Quebec also has 33% of the Supreme Court. Although we have problems in this country, we may be best but we are not perfect. Tothiak that the constitution can wait; what we need to change is our elected rep- resentatives, In B.C. we have to wait another four years, but nationally, 1 will get the Opportunity next year. 1 do not know who Il vote for, but | know who | will not vote for, and I urge every Canadian to consider this: Do not vote for an incumbent — things can only get better. For the Oct. 26 vote, I say No. No to your agreement and No to you! Alan S.
