After losing his opening singles match against Daniel Nestor in five sets on Friday evening he came back with a decisive straight-sets victory over Connell to get Sweden back into the series. Flicka’s Angela Orange top junior at Calgary’s Altadore Invitational FIFTEEN FLICKA Na- tional and Provincial A gymnasts took part in the Invitational hosted by the Calgary based Altadore Gym Club on Feb. i. Leading the Junior team was Flicka'’s Angela Orange who took first place on the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise and won the all-around title. The team also finished first. Team mate Laura Mazur was second all-around, won the beam, was second on floor and fourth, on bars. Raila Gutman was sixth all- around, placing filth on bars, and sixth on beam and floor while the fourth team member, Daphne O’Young was seventh all-around with a second on floor, fifth on bars and sixth on vault. Nine strong teams were entered in the open division which was won by the host Altadore team. The Flicka open team finished a creditable second. Flicka’s Aparna Ray finished third all-around with fourth place on vault, sixth on bars and beam and eighth on floor. Marlies Ernst was sixth all- around with fourth place on bars and fifth on floor. Kristi Mardyn was ninth all- around and second on vault, while Liss Nakano placed second on beam. The open winner was Aliadore’s Jennifer Wood who scored a perfect 10 on vault and 9.90 on floor. The young Flicka novice team placed fourth. Melanie Redlich won vault while team mate Blythe Hartley placed second and Christine Woo was fifth. Redlich placed seventh all- around and also had a seventh cn bars and eighth on floor. Former Globetrotter holds two-hour clinics THE NORTH Shore YMCA will be hosting Mel Davis, ex-Harlem Globetrotter, for a two-hour pro- fessional day clinic on Feb. 14 for West Vancouver schools and Feb. 21 for North Vancouver schools. For more than 18 years **Trick’’ Davis entertained worldwide au- diences as a player and coach of the famous Globetrotters. He has coached such NBA greats as Isaiah Thomas, Terry Cummings, Ricky Green, Doc Rivers, Maurice ‘*Moe’’ Cheeks and mare. Davis will be offering instruc- tion in a two-hour clinic by cover- ing such skills as dribbling, pass- ing, shooting and guarding. Davis works with the athletes to improve attitude, offence, defence, team- work and hustle. Clinic times on Feb. 14 (West Van Pro Day) are 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for Grades 4-6 and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for Grades 7- 10. For more information or to register, phone 926-5541, Bunting scores 31 pts. in Blues basketball loss IN FRIDAY night action at the Sportsplex, the Capilano College Blues played host to Vancouver Community Col- lege (VCC) in men’s and women’s basketball, with Blues player Mark Bunting emerging as leader in overall scoring. By Michael J. Gilgan Contributing Writer In men’s action, the Capilano Blues got off to a slow start allowing VCC to take a 20-point lead early in the first half. This deficit held steady until well into the second half when Capilaro’s Bunting started a comeback drive. Bunting let fly fer 24 points in the second half, bringing his team to within six points of the lead. The drive was kept alive until Capilano guard Chris Mulgrew, another key man in the comeback, was taken out of the game with an injury. After that, the Blues fell behind 16 points for a final score of 84- 100. : Bunting led the game in overali scoring with 31 points, compared to VCC’s high scorer, at 25. Earlier Friday, the Blues women’s team held it close ir the first haif, only to lose ground in the second for a 38-69 final tally. Heidi Maida led the Capilano drive with 17 points on the game, tying for first place in overal! scoring with two players from vec. VCC ladies’ coach Rob Turenne made himself known by drawing a technical foul in the first half and then by attacking a fan in the second. The attack, a vigorous CAPILANO COLLEGE SPORTS shove from behind, was provoked when the man walked in front of the VCC bench while the game was in progress. Astonished spectators became hushed when Turenne lunged at the Capilano fan. On Saturday night the men’s and women's Blues travelled to Trinity Western University where once again they came away empty handed. In the women’s game Maida scored 25 points and team mate Lisa Dournovo rallied for 13, but to no avail as Trinity controlled the game to win 83-58. In the men’s game, all went well for the Blues in the first half unti! about a minute and a half re- mained. Trinity rallied to finish the half and shortly into the se- cond half had built up a 20-point lead. Capilano was unable to shake the deficit and finished the game with a score of 105-78 for Trinity. Bunting once again led the drive for Capilano, picking up 33 points in the game. When questioned on the men’s two and seven win/loss record this season coach Ken Sherk cited defence and penetration as areas his team needs to work on. “One of the problems we've had all season long is that our guards haven't been able to penetrate properly,’’ said Sherk. However, he commended Bunting for his excellent play. Both men’s and women’s teams will face Okanagan College on Friday, Feb. 7.
