Forgettable date; but
memorable Walk Home

OW, WHAT was it Freud said...there are no acci-
dents? Obviously, he never saw Mystery Date.

Tom McHugh (Ethan
Hawke) idolizes his brother, Craig
(Brian McNamara), a slick legal-
eagle who is so stylish he drives a
’°S9 powder blue DeSoto and so
cool, he wears glasses purely for
effect.

Pitying the insecure teenager's
crush on a lithe mystery blonde,
big brother arranges a date for
Tom with Geena Matthews (Teri
Polo). (Hence, the title.)

Naturally, little brother listens
when his elder sibling advises,
“There are worse things than be-
ing slapped by a beautiful woman.
You'll see.” And he does.

By using his brother's car, credit
and clothes, he quickly realizes
that Craig is not the popular, lov-
able lawyer he appeared to be.
Angry women, the cops, the Asian
underworld and an insane florist
(Fisher Stevens) are out for blood.

And. since Craig has never actual-
ly been seen by these extremely
well-armed desperadoes (coin-
cidence or what), they all chase
innocent Tom.

The leads are adequate, but why
is the florist a live action Wile E.
Cayote with his backfiring at-
tempts at rever:ge? (At one point

immensely moving, holding her
family together while making a
brave stand, She won the Oscar
for Ghost, but this is what acting is
