Famous collection

on view in Nevada

AT ONE time, Bill Har-
rah’s car museum near
Reno, Nevada displayed
over 1,400 automobiles, the
largest collection in the
world.

After Harrah died suddenly in
1978, this magnificent collection,
atong with Harrah's hotel and ca-
sino empire, was sold to the Holi-
day Corporation. Most of the cars
were then auctioned off to various
collectors and museums around
the world.

Many Nevada residents and car
enthusiasts mourned the loss of
this great collection, and there was
considerable pressure to keep it
together. Holiday Corporation
generously donated 175 vehicles,
then worth $18 million, and a $3
million library to the William F.
Harrah foundation, 2 public
foundation started with the intent
of building a new rauseum.

Ten years and millions of
dollars later, this fantastic new
museum was opened to the public.

“We tried to combine both his-
toric factors and amusement
aspects in this facility,’* Hilton
said. **We have an original theatre
presentation, four period Sirect
scenes and four galleries which
house the body of the collection."”

The four ‘streets’, called Turn-
of-the-Century Street, ’30s Street,
"50s Street and Modern Street,
come complete with pavement,

curbs, parking meters and period
architecture. Cars from each era
are ‘parked’ at the side of the
road next to authentic looking
store-fronts, movie theatres, side-
walks. garages, and so on.

To add realism to the effect.
skylights above the streets provide
daylight, and each sireet ends at a
large glass window, giving the il-
lusion that the street continues

outside beyond the building.
