festhill resident slams school Dear Editor: Having lost in their attempt to secure a site for their secondary school expansion in the Westhill area of West Vancouver, | now find that Collingwood Schoo! is attempting to have part of their school property rezoned to allow the construction of a separate two-storey secondary school wing. This issue is to be the subject of a public hearing and mecting on March 7 at the West Vancouver Municipal Hall, I must state here that | am opposed to this rezoning for a number of reasons. Living across from Coll- ingwood, | have been exposed to the tremendous increase in traffic flow to and from the school tesulting in chaos with cars park- ing everywhere, even in my driveway. For what was designed to be a neighborhood school in a quict residential area, it is clear that the roads are not designed for the amount of traffic now present. With Collingwood going to Grade 12 next year I fear that the traffic will get worse regardless of what is proposed, Another serious issue to consider is the lack of school playing fields. Collingwood is currently using the adjacent Glenmore Park as a means to solve its lack of adequate space. With the expansion to take up most of what is left of their grass field, I see more and more SNUG COVE TREATMENT SYSTEM Check sewage facts first Dear Editor: In the Sunday, Feb. 28 edition of the North Shore News Viewpoint under the title Sewage scheme stinks, your writer refers to a proposed 20,000 gal/day primary treatment system for Snug Cove on Bowen Island. Let's set the record straight on this picce of ir- responsible heresay. You appear to ask — what is the plan? The plan, if your Viewpoint writer had bothered to check it out, is the result of 10 years of engincering studies, technical papers, public health warnings and closure r«:tices, and provincial government, interministry studies and reports., There has been a tremendous amount of time spent, culminating in the last two full years, which have fi- nally. resulted in a workable alternative — one which is approved by the director of waste management for the province of B.C. and is financially in reach for the 19 property owners. threatened with closure. There have been large: expenditures of both public and private monies, as- well as severe emotional turmoil caused in Our community by this issue. What right does your paper have to inflame the sit- uation through innuendo, condescension, and un- principled, irresponsible journalism? ‘Where is your perspective? Your Lions Gate primary treatment system, which serves the entire North Shore with a resident and work force popula- tion of 186,000 people, punips 47,400,000 gal/day peak flow into Burrard Inlet under the Lions Gate Bridge. The proposed Snug Cove primary treatment system, which serves 29 private 40’ x 100° lots (with 19 owners), will discharge up to 20,000 gal/day at peak flows into Howe Sound. Both of these systems are primary treatment-septic tank systems with ocean outfalls, as is the sewage disposal system which serves the entire 1,500,000 population of the Greater Vancouver Regional Disctrict/Lower Mainland area. The Snug Cove system will discharge clarified cffluent at a rate equivalent to a garden hose into Howe Sound, NOT raw feces as you scurrilously infer, Your News Viewpoint writer made NO attempt to check any facts with elected officials on Bowen Island or the Sewer District Trustees. Your News Viewpoint writer didn’t even attempt to check any facts with your own reporter who filed the original story on Fri- day, Feb. 26. Does this type of irresponsible, unscrupulous jour- nalism represent your cditorial policy? The North Shore News has an obligation to check the facts be- fore it ventures into these murky waters. Gail Taylor, Regional Director, Bowen Island (Electoral Area C) 7 - triday, activities being shified into Glen- more Park. 1 feel that in this scenario, by allowing Collingwood School to use Glenmore Park as a school playground, the residents of West Vancouver are in effect subsidizing a private school. This if allowed to continue will Jead to problems over who has the right to use the park — the public or Collingwood School? Other issues to be looked into News support Dear Editor: On behalf of the North Shore Retaract Club, [| would like to thank the North Shore News for bringing the Ronald McDonald House/Retaract Motorhome Raf- fle to the public's attention. During our weekend at Save- On-Foods we sold more tickets on the North Shore than on any previous weekend and we believe March 4, 198% - North Shore News expansion are the garbage left lying around, the noise both during the day and at night and the effect the expan- sion will have on property values. Last but not least is the inconve- nience suffered by the local resi- dents of Glenmore should the ex- pansion go ahead. I fully encourage those opposed to the expansion of Collingwood School to stand and be counted at the public meeting on March 7. Virginia Raynsford, West Van appreciated that this is due to the publicity given (to this fund raiser by Noel Wright in his column (Fri., Feb. 42). It is indeed gratifying to have a community newspaper like yours which supports the endeavors of local youth groups.
