Fall is the ideal time
to revitalize the lawn

FOR MANY homeowners, spring
has been the traditional time to
work on the lawn.

Reseeding, fertilizing and other
lawn work seem to make most
sense at the beginning of the grow-
ing season, but horticulturists tell
us that, in fact, the opposite is
true.

In fall, as the days become
shorter, the rate of green leaf
growth slows in favor of root
development. At this time, grass
plants also produce excess car-
bohydrates which are stored for
future use.

The vigorous root systems and
nutrient reserves that will carry
Jawngrasses through next sum-
mer's heat are produced now.

These factors, plus cooler
weather and more abundant rain-
fall, make fall the ideal time to
start a new lawn or revitalize an
established one.

A new fawn from seed

To prepare the seed bed for a
new lawn, first remove stones and
debris, then rototill the soil. Lime
and fertilizer should be added
now.

After soit has been levelled with
a grading rake, seed using a lawn
spreader for uniform application,
then rake lightly to cover seed.

Water as needed to keep the soil
surface moist until grass becomes
established. A light mulch of
weed-free straw will help maintain
surface moisture and speed ger-
mination.

Easy makeover for lawns

If your lawn is more than 50 per
cent dead grass and/or weeds,
drastic measures are probably in
order. One quick-fix method is to
scarify the lawn with a power rake,
or verti-cutter. This machine has
powerful tines which slice through
the existing turf and the soil below.

Once loose thatch and other
debris have been cleaned up, the
old turf provides an excellent,
moisture-holding bed for new seed.
