Introduced five years ago as a cooperative initiative of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association and Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, the pro- gram has spearheaded the rapid, quality construction of houses meeting the str- ingent R-2000 performance standards for energy effi- ciency and environmental comfort. . A house built to rigorous R-2000 standards (which far exceed the toughest provin- cial building codes) cuts heating costs by up to 70 per cent over a conventional structure while providing an ultra-quiet environment that’s virtually free of drafts and dust. AIRTIGHT Featuring airtight con- struction and a continuous air-vapor barrier to eliminate heat loss, an R-2000 home has double the insulation values found in the walls, ceilings and exterior doors of conventional homes. Its mechanical ventilation system maintains indoor air quality and a comfortable humidity level, and double- or triple-glazed windows help minimize heat loss. Most units also feature a heat recovery ventilator, which can recover up to 75 per cent of the heat from outgoing stale air and use it to heat incoming fresh air. An extensive testing pro- gram run by EMR on 300 R-2000 homes and 84 con- ventional units constructed at the same time found the air quality in the R-2000 homes to be markedly supe- tior, with more frequent air changes and less pollutants in the kitchen, washrooms, laundry and work areas. R-2000 homes must con- form to specified space heating requirements based on their size and location in Canada. As well, they must be able to control extra heat gained from south-facing windows and have a mini- mum insulation value of RSI 3.5 in exterior walls. Virtually any architectural design can be used in con- struction of an R-2000 home. And although an R- 2000 house costs between 5 and 10 per cent more to build than a conventional structure, the expenditure is soon recovered through much lower operating and maintenance costs. ENERGY SAVINGS Canadian lending institu- tions often take the energy savings factor into account by allowing buyers of R- 2000 homes a higher debt- to-income mortgage — up to 32 per cent of gross monthly income rather than the con- ventional upper limit of 30 per cent. R-2000 standards have evolved through intensive government-sponsored research into heat loss and energy-conserving construc- tion techniques. Today, the R-2000 Home Program pro- vides Canadian builders with detailed information on design and construction techniques, marketing and business management. Some 4,000 builders have attended R-2000 training seminars, and even more have been introduced to HOT-2000, a computer pro- .gram that~can help them See R-2000 ‘Page 52 Trevor Inglis 2 res: 921-5949 NEW LISTING 3465 EMERALD DR.
