Mid-fielder Mike Lucking, who also turned in a strong effort, cap- ped off the solid showing when he hammered in a sizzling low drive from 25 yards on a set-up from McQueen that sealed the Rangers’ victory. : The Western Division standings, meanwhile, tightened up when Characters Restaurant (formerly Molsons) upset Norvan 6-2 to move within a point of the leaders, while Park Royal Hotel jumped back into a first-place tie by doubl- ing Ray Johnson Plumbing 4-2. Mount Seymour Ravens are also only a point out of first after a 2-0 shut-out win over the Totemcolor All-stars. Lynnwood Nordic maintained their two-point cushion atop the Eastern Division despite conceding their first goal in a 3-1 win over Millers. Lynn Valley, meanwhile, kept pace with a 4-1 triumph over Ger- mania Old-Timers and Olympia Goldcaps downed Lynnwood Brewers 5-2. SOCCER Nationals win THE NORTH Shore Nationals, sponsored by the Cheshire Cheese Inn, edged Mountain Shadow 1-0 in first division play of the Senior Men’s Metro Soccer League recently. The first half was scoreless with both teams having good scoring opportunities. In the second half Mountain Shadow had an opportunity to open the scoring after the team was awarded a penalty shot. But Nationals’ keeper Paul Stone made a brilliant save to keep the score tied at zero, The save sparked the Nationals as they took the lead with a perfectly timed through bail from Freddy Allen to Peter *‘Skeets’’ Coley, who made no mistake as he took the ball around the Shadow’s keeper and tucked it in. Mountain Shadow pressed for- ward looking for the equalizer but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Nationals’ defence pulled through with Steve Watkins, Rob Rogers, Bruce Nichols and Steve Drew preserving the 1-0 victory. The Nationals' next game is against Tayside Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at Cleveland north field. CANADIAN Dolphin Swim Club president Jim King and club head coach Tom Johnson recently announc- ed the return of Howard Firby. Firby will work with the club's team coaches con- centrating on the stroke skills of the junior to national level swimmers. Firby’s addition to the Dolphin coaching staff will y help ensure improved Dolphin results in the coming years and in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. As a professional coach, writer, illustrator and lec- turer, Firby has toured the world, visiting 206 clubs as Canada’s first swimming technical director. He was a vital ingredient to the program that pro- duced the current surge in Canadian swim success and is the only Canadian coach inducted into the Interna- tional Swimming Hall of Fame. His coaching record speaks for uself. Firby was the 1958 Commonwealth Games Coach and the 1964 Olympic Games Coach. He coached 12 world record holders, including Mary Stewart and Flaine Tanner. Firby started the Dolphins in 1956 and was head coach until 1967. Under his direction, club swimmers dominated Ca- nadian swimming. They broke 11 world records, won international games gold medals in all swim categories, set more than 300 Canadian senior and countless national age group records, and won the annual national team title six times.
