& - Sunday, July 27, 1980 North Shore Ne ws trustee watchdog OPEN LETTER TO WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD It is unfortunate that the West Vancouver Parents Association will now have to be the ‘‘wat- chdogs”’ of the elected trustees — but it has come to that. I realize we have diversely dif- ferent opinions of the needs of a good public education system. [, as a parent, taxpayer and educator, seem to be viewed by you as hav- ing a ‘‘conflict of interest’’ in the budget matter. 1 have a vested in- terest, of three children to educate, at $3,300 per year, for twelve years each. And you have nearly driven me to have them educated in another district. May I remind you again that in confrontation nobody wins. If we work together our children will win because what you invest in public education you .-emtually get out. This means the future, older oliins should deal with garbage | idroppers| OPEN LETTER TO DOUG COLLINS Read your column regularly. Share your vic... —- but on the question of immigration. Why waste your tinie? As you are well aware, Enoch Powell tried very hard to warn the British government. They still have a problem, as does the U.S.A., and other places in this world. An exercise in futility. So, why not direct your talents to local matters? Run for premier, then concentrate on such problems as dealing with the ‘‘garbage droppers’’. Take a walk around Ambleside Park any Saturday or Sunday morning. After those convenience stores have sold their so/t drinks and fast food to those who promptly deposit their empty car- tons, beer bottles among other things, right at their feet, despite having the local authorities provide garbage bins at every few yards. No point in threatening fines. You are dealing with ‘‘simple- minded’? types who should be treated as such. So, girls, when out with your boyfriend, and witness him drop litter at his feet, beware, he is ‘“‘simple-minded”’ and will grow up that way. In addition, make all those stores who sell this type of drink and food clean up their surroun- ding areas, or receive a stiff fine. Frederick W. Banks West Vancouver generations will also win. Spare me the chetoric that there are people in West Vancouver who could not have afforded the extra $5 per month tor a larger, safer budget. We, in Lions Bay, do not believe we are “average Canadians."’ We are artists, builders, lawyers, teachers, counsellors, small business owners, dentists, doctors, nurses, veterinarians, fallers, ete. We do not want ‘same services** or average education for our children. We are, in West Vancouver be- ing referred to as the ‘‘California of the North."' For those of you who do not understand, California Proposition 13 cut education taxes to such a great extent that they are now scrambling to hire teachers in Canada to rebuild education in California. They must be skilled and employable when they graduate, The new equipment needed to train them costs money. You have, because of lack of funds, moved the Cérade 7s into the high schools, where they definitely do not belong. Have you done comparative studies between our neighboring school districts of North Van- couver, Vancouver and Sevhelt? We can assure you that we have, and comparatively speaking West Vancouver is embarrassingly under funded for 1986-1987. What are your motives in reduc- ing the budget? Or if you don't have any ulterior motives, are you really that ignorant of the basic needs of the public education system in West Vancouver?
