Mailbox - Sunday, January 12, 1986 ~ North Shore News Canadian gov't was motivated by racism Dear Editor: Re: Doug Collins’ remarks about the Japa- nese-Canadian redress situa- tion: While I may agree that atrocities is not the precise word for the way Canadians of Japanese descent were treated between 1941 and 1949, there is no doubt in my mind that their treatment was a crime by government, motivated by racism. Such a motivation can be inferred merely by consider- ing the answer to the ques- tion, were Candians of German descent interned in eastern Canada? As an American who has been a resident of Canada for nineteen years, I did not Jearn until about a year ago that the Canadian gov- ernment’s actions were far worse than those in the U.S. Japanese-Canadians were forced to pay for their own internment from the money that the forced sale of their property brought; and at the Dear Editor: ' Thank you. 1 buy your newspaper on the North Shore once a week to get a rare breath of fresh air and common sense that you present with your col- umnist Doug Collins. I expect that you are under considerable pressure to muzzle him. I get the sense that Mr. Speck is the kind of man who won’t knuckle under. Jack Powell, Vancouver Dear Editor: } would like to take this opportunity to thank the paramedics and West Van- couver Police for their prompt response to my daughter's phone call for emergency help when J had a heart attack recently. I have not found Cana- dians in general any more knowledgeable on this mat- ter than I was, and I wonder how mamy of those soun- ding off against the idea of redress for Japa- nese-Canadians realize that fellow-citizens, many born in this country, had taken away from them fundamental rights of suffrage and free movement until four years after the end of the war, solely on the basis of their national origin or heritage. As for his sneers at Mr. Art Miki, our supposedly careful journalist has got nis facts wrong. A simple inquiry to a reli- able source (Art Miki’s brother, who lives in Van- couver) yielded 1936, not 1950, as the year of Art Miki’s birth. He and his parents, all born in Canada, and his grandfather, a natu- ralized citizen, were uprooted from their home in B.C. and interned, and in the post-war dispersal forced to move to Manitoba. Thus he has every reason to have a personal beef.
