B7 - Wednesday, June 13, 1984 - North Shore News cacao | Zi le | Summer safety and savings THE SAVINGS to be had by regularly checking and servic- ing your car can be con- siderabie. According to BCAA, proper maintenance can reduce fuel consumption, help avoid major repairs and keep insurance premiums low by preventing accidents due to vehicle problems. ‘*While it’s easy to think of the benefits of car maintenance in terms of dollars saved, the real benefits come in reduced ac- cidents, deaths and injury,’’ says BCAA’s Manager of Vehicle Inspection Services, Dave Steventon. This summer, BCAA recommends that you have a safety check on your car before leaving on vacation. Steventon recommends hav- ing a qualified technician in- spect the following items: Check tire pressure to en- sure that all tires, including the spare, are properly in- flated. Also check for wear and damage. Have the steering system checked. The exhaust pipe, muffler and tailpipe should be in- spected for any leaks. A leaky exhaust system is not only loud but inefficient and can emit poisonous fumes to the interior of the car. A mechanic should check brakes for lining wear, fluid condition, brake line leaks and rust, and for sufficient pedal travel and pressure. Honda recalls motorcycles HONDA CANADA Inc. an- nounced that it was volun- tarily recalling its 1984 model GL1200 motorcycles because of a problem with the igni- tion switch. Interference between the ignition switch wire harness and the switch cover may cause the cover to loosen. This may result in a poor electrical connection and the loss of all electrical functions. Honda Canada says that although 4,680 motorcycles are covered by the recall, less than 2 per cent of the motor- cycles may contain the defect. Owners of the affected motorcycles will be notified by Honda Canada when to take their motorcycles to an authorized Honda dealer.
