i mailbox >< WE'LL RANT AND WE'LL ROAR Like true Newfoundlanders Dear Editor: 1, as a Newfoundlander, living in North Vancouver since July, 1983, take strong exception to the use of ‘‘Newfie’’ and ‘‘Newfie land’’ to refer to the New- foundland people and my home province, as written by Bob Hunter in his column of Sunday, April 29. (re N.D.P. Seals its Fate) For the information of Mr. Hunter, in particular, and for those of your readers, in general, who may be unaware of the fact, the word ‘‘Newfie’’ is considered by Newfoundlanders to be derogatory and insulting. Indeed, we feel that it is akin to using the words **dago”’ or ‘*nigger’’ or - **chief’’, etc. to refer to other groups of Canadians! If Mr. Hunter used the ‘term’ in ignorance of its true connotation, he will now be the wiser for having read this complaint, and I trust, will print an apology, accordingly. if, however, he, in his posi- tion of resonsibility, fully in- tended to ridicule and belittle Canada’s newest province and its people, I can think only that Canada must re- main a small nation, despite its vast size, for some years yet to come. ° Syivia Allen North Vancouver Infill hearing unnecessary Dear Editor: Your editorial entiteld *‘ Artificial issue’’ in the Sun- day edition of the North Shore News, April 22, 1984, contains a number of errors. 1.The Combined Ratepayers Committee, not ‘*Association’’, is acting sole- ly at this time on the Propos- ed Foreshore Lease between the Provincial Government and the Municipality of West Vancouver. 2.
