NIFFING THE AIR the other day | detected
a bad smell, and sure enough yet another

parliamentary

task

force was in the

neighborhood. This time it was the task force on

prostitution and pornography. Good works and
censorship were everywhere.

The very expression ‘‘task
force’’ smells. Why isn’t the
simple word ‘*committee”’
good enough? Because pom-
posity is loose in the tand,
that's why. Anyway, if
there's anything more tiring
than the taskers themselves
ws the people who appear
before them, because
everyone knows that nothing
will change where prosutu-
tion and pornography are
concerned. And if anything
did change, tt would only be
tor the worse

The North Shore figured
big at the hearings ot which 1]
speak, there being battalions
of do-gooders in these parts
anxious to wrestle sin to the
ground Thus Donna Stewart
and Janice Andrews were on
parade, and according to
Canadian Press reports
Stewart suggested that Jim-
my Pattison, the Expo charr-
man and churchpoer, is a
porn: peddler

Gerard. To no effect, since
the film ran for a whole year

since the days when men
scratched on the walls of
caves. It was around in the
davs of the Roman Empire,
as anyone knows who has
visited Pompei No doubt
ladies and gents in togas ap-
neared before the Roman
Senate, pleading that the ar-
ists who drew such naughty
pictures should be thrown to
the lions.

I'd hike to publicly express
my thanks to Capilano Mall
admuinistrauon for its recent
promotion of the three North
Shore library systems. Dur-
ing the school spring break
period, library represen-
latives were able to display
material and to tell the public
about the current diversity of
library services available.

Capilano Mall is to be
commended for its en-
thusiastic community sup-
port. tt was a pleasure to
work with mall ad-
ministrators, maintenance
and security staff, and to
meet the merchants and
members of the public.
