Head coach Bob Buchan of North Vancouver and ° assistant coach’ Larry Wilkinson of Langley have chosen a solid group of youngsters who will be at- tempting to capture B.C.’s der 16so Seeking National soccer honors first national all-star title in several years. B.C., seeded two in the six-team tournament based on last year's placings, have been grouped together with Alberta and host Manitoba. The other three-team group comprises last years cham- pions Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Each team plays the other team in its group to deter- mine group standings. Two points are awarded each vic- tory, 1 point for each tie. At the conclusion of round- robin play, final and con- solation round games are completed. The winner of group one plays the winner of group two in the championship game. B.C., who've played in a senior men’s soccer league through the summer for off- season competition, will meet host Manitoba in their first encounter, August 18. MAINLAND league first division cricket play, West Van “A” pulled off a surprise five wickets victory against league leaders Van- couver at Douglas Park on Saturday, a surprise because, prior to the game, West Van were firmly placed in the division cellar with on- ly four wins from eleven games whilst Vancouver had lost only two from twelve. Vancouver, batting first, were always struggling for runs against a keen West Van -bowling attack sup- ported by faultless fielding which produced three run outs. Best bowling figures came from Steve Milbourn (4 for 28) and Steve Miller, 2 for 40, off 18 overs. Vancouver's innings ended at 102. After early set-backs, West Van won the game thanks to a solid partnership of 75 between Mike Moore (39) and Chris Bennett (36). Scores: Vancouver 102 all out. West Van “A” 105 for 5 wickets. West Van “B” 213 for 5 declared. Seattle “B” 30 all out. Canucks unveil schedule ‘VANCOUVER CANUCKS kick off their 80-game NHL season October 5 when they host arch-rival Calgary Flames and conclude it 177 days later when the Min- nesota North Stars visit Van- couver, March 30. Like last year, Canucks will face Smythe Division rivals cight times each — four at home and four on the road - while they meet the other 16 NHL clubs three times apiece. In an effort to satisfy local fans’ desires for weekend dates at Pacific Coliseum, Canucks have scheduled 12 home Friday contests, five Saturday and cight home Sunday games. That makes 25 of their 40 home games weekend events. Of the re- maining 15 home dates, seven each will fall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a lone contest on a holi- day Monday, Dec. 26. Their second round game is against Alberta on August 20th. Final and consolation round games are scheduled for August 21st. Alex Percy of West Van Spuraways is the lone North Shore player on the 16 man roster. Throughout the tourna- ment Canadian Soccer Association coaching staff will monitor the perfor- mances of 100 of the coun- try’s best under-16 division players, They'll also conduct EEL la: 2 aan (EF bid several training sessions with the players during the com- petition, looking to develop potential national team pro- spects. CSA national amateur teams coach Bob Bearpark will supervise the special training. The tournament is also-at- tended by several North American Soccer League scouts who have an oppor- tunity to look over the crop of youngsters who will be eligible for the League draft in a couple of years. Several players have been chosen from this year’s Provincial Cup winning under-16 team from Victoria - Gordon Head Coppen’s ‘Jewellers. Also travelling to the tour- nament with the B.C. squad will be team manager Maurice Edward, team trainer Dal Martin, and BCYSA All-Star Team Co- ordinator Fred Jopson.
