For the next 18 weeks, John Giles, Peter Lorimer, Nobby Stiles. Bobby Lenarduzzi and Mark Nickeas will be writing columns in the NEWS, giving soccer tips, and anecdotes fram a background of many years in the game atail levels, as they prepare for the 1983 season under the “dome”. To start off this week, Whuecaps ceach John Gites gives readers a brief glimpse of the background which was to make the small Irishman one of the best soccer ‘brains in the world. By JOHNNY GILES Soccer wasn't popular when I was growing up in Dublin. It was, and in some places still is, a foreign game. Because it wasn't THE game, there were very little organized soccer for the kids. Yet it was something that all kids did anyway. We would get together and get a game going without the benefit of coaches, referees or goal posts. A group of us would gather and head off to the nearest open space. It started with Goofy’s Place hanging on to first place with a decisive 5-0 We were always playing when we were young. And we didn’t have any special positions. We'd play anywhere on the field and if one of us really got tired, he’d go back in goal for awhile to gather his strength. Unless of course, his team was getting a thrashing. That was when you stayed away from goal. There was no _ formal organization to our games, but we did learn and we did have fun because we were always playing and we always had a ball at our feet. When we got older some of us who were “hooked” on the game ended up with the Dublin schoolboys. Because the game wasn’t that well and the European Cup Winner's Cup. During this time I was also playing regularly for the Republic of Ireland. I ended with 60 caps, although as I said awhile back, since I was already manager of the side, I was able to pick myself quite often. My last two seasons in England were with West Bromwich Albion where I Soccer was a foreign game it. It’s a far more professional organization than many of the British sides. It’s been a wonderful life for me, my wife and our six children and it’s especially enjoyable being over here in an environment where so Many youngsters are becoming involved and excited by the game, and where it’s just starting to played and managed. But that didn’t work out. The organized at any level, there interference—from—the—elub any formal soccer played in schools. Our team would play against other similar organizations which would be run by the very few who did want to see the game established in the area. From this’ excellent background I went on to Manchester United for four years, then to Leeds for 11 seasons. These were the good years when we won the F.A. Cup, the League championship victory over North Shore Darkroom. The North Shore News, who were bumped out of top spot by Goofy’s a few weeks ago, weren't satisfied until six goals squeezed by the frustrated keeper for Trev Jones Excavating. Scandicraft maintained their second place tie with the News when they downed the North Shore Chiefs 3-0. Pegasus Old Boys are having a better year. Their three-one victory over the still winless Lynnwood Hotel moved them into third place. Two goals off the penalty dot gave Rive Brothers Land- Two Great Ways To Stretch Your Dine Out Dollar!
