according to North Vancouver school crossing

guards.

Vearl Kettner, who has
guarded the crossing at East
Keith and Hendry for the
past eight years, says drivers
seem to have gone crazy.

And with ice and frost on

the road, it’s a deadly
combination, she says.
Her friend, Mary

Mulligan, a crossing guard at
Ridgeway, says it’s just as
bad on her patrol.

Recently she had a car
only narrowly miss her when
the driver completely
ignored her holding up a

“We are finding winter is
really bad,” says Kettner,
“what with the misty
mornings and ice, the drivers
seem to go just crazy.”

“We've noticed a lot more
speeding. I had a car take
the curb and go up on the
sidewalk at my crossing.
Drivers are just going too
fast.”

It's hazardous enough
even without the added
danger of wild drivers, she
says.

crossing stripes painted on
the road become so slippery
that children can barely
keep upright on them.

But the way some people
drive makes the situation
much worse, she adds.

“There was a car coming
down Hendry the other day
and it didn’t even stop at the
Keith intersection but just
sailed on right through.”

Her plea to motorists,
especially in winter weather,
is: “Take care, there are kids
out there.”
