I found Bob Hunter's
“Divorce Recommended”
irritating and silly. His
treatment of a serious topic
and feeble . attempts at
humour are annoying. His

article is so easily
paraphrased, | offer:
- Marriage.
The word is always

mentioned tongue-in-cheek,
as though it were a totally
outdated, unnecessary
choice.

It has the ring of stability,
caring, commitment. It’s like
being roped by a kassoo. It is
to be avoided at all costs.

When the statistics’ are
trotted out, marriage is
always listed as a plus, while
divorce gets a minus sign.

To be married is somehow
not ‘quite as glamorous as
being divorced. Or at least,
that’s the general attitude.

“Yet the truth is that
marriage is the greatest
invention since Adam and
Eve. I'd hate to live in a
world without it. ~

On your recipe page in
large print appears —COOK
THOSE LOBSTERS
ALIVE. And, it goes on to
report that in David
Tedone’s book “Complete
Shellfisherman’s Guide” the
only exception is when
broiling, in which case the
lobster should be alive when
you split him with a knife
prior to cooking! Now
remember, dear reader,
these gourmets are not
savages or poor hungry
people — they are just on a
jaunt to enjoy themselves!
You would think that since
they. are taking life, that they
would think up ways to do it
decently and humanely! Just
consider, do we deserve
peace and humane treat-
ment ourselves if we con-
tinue to use nature 50
cruelly?

Frankly, I don’t see many
divorces that look totally
groovy (“groovy”?7). In most
cases, born-again -do-your-
own-thing singles are soon
locked into a series of ego

are worked out, invariably at
the expense of rational
behaviour.

To understand marriage,
we have to have at least a
clue about the: nature of
devotion. Of course, it has
been romanticized in
mainstream Western culture
in the last couple of cen-
turies (can they all be
wrong?). ;

But basically, it has always
been a form of personal
commitment, unselfishness
— or, putting another's
welfare before your own, to
coin a phrase.

involved, the in-laws, the

that I -wound up getting
married myself.

Probably it did, but you
could go nuts trying to figure
out every little twist and
warp in your mind. Maybe
this means my own kids are
destined for happy
marriages, too. Some sort of
