In the lion’s den

The news that the Athletes in Action group, a
collection of dedicatéd Christians, have almost
finalized a deal to purchase Houston Hurricane of
the North American Soccer League and move

them into.Memphis does not,

at first glance,

create much of a stir. However, in retrospect, the
move will undoubtedly be felt in the boardrooms,

in league meetings,
Christians generally.

In an age where double-
talk by team officials is
accepted as standard
behaviour, where the dirty
player can wnite best sellers
and be exposed to millions
by doing sweet little TV
commercials, where hockey
more closely resembles a
shabby imitation of roller
derby. and where fans
favorite chant is B--- S---, the
introduction of a wholly
owned Chnstian team could
equate with Danie! in the

and especially among
Lion’s den. (No, Vic,
those Lions).

Athletes in Action operate
a basketball team in the
United States and one in
Canada, staffed with
Americans, who use their
basketball as a means of
being able to ‘witness.’

The group has made con-
siderable inroads in football
with most pro teams in
Canada and the U.S. having
regular prayer meetings with
players.

But the move into the pros
as a full working. capital
backed partner, alongside
the secular organization is a
different ball game. .

The high profile owner
position will put the group
into the position of having to
live what they preach, not
only in the boardrooms but
on the field as well. No
mean feat for anyone today,
especially when the gospel
they preach does not allow
for any bending of the rules
which is so often the case in

the sporting world, and
everywhere else for that
matter.

In soccer, Kyle Rote Jr.

would have to be the most
prominent active Christian
in North America. One of
the truly ‘nice guys’ in sport,
Rote lives what he believes

without being ‘preachy.’
Always accessible, the
former Dallas Tornado and
Houston Hirricane has a
knack of being interested in
all he comes in contact with,
especially the smaller auto-
graph hunters.

Back in ‘79, when Houston
had their big season, Rote
was more than likely nearing
the end of his career. He saw
more bench time than action
on the field, yet in the
dressing room the young
American was a _ definite
leader according to the other
players.

It would be nice to think
that an all Christian team, if
that is what the owners plan,
will be able to have an
impact on pro sport, and
especially on the kids who
are so hung up on hero
worship of sports stars.

Many of the athletes who
are emulated and venerated
today just don’t stand up
under careful scrutiny. In
fact, the reason that some
are in the spotlight 1s
because of their off the field
activities.

If your children are going
to have their heros then it
would be great to think that
they guys they look up to
deserve it.

It won't be easy for any
Christian team. There are
those types who will rub it in
