44 — Wednesday, July 10, 1991 - North Shore News Thompson earns spot on youth swim team VAUGHN THOMPSON of the Chena Swim Club has qualified for the Canadian national vourh team which will compete at an in- ternational youth meet mid-July in Madrid, Spain. Thompson, 16, qualified for the team after winning the gold medal in the 200-metre breaststroke at the recent) Canadian national youth championships. He posted a long course time of 2:21.58 — almost five seconds faster than his previous best. Thompson also set a new B.C. age group record in the event. In addition to the 200, Thomp- son will compete in the i00 after he earned a silver medal in the 100-metre breaststroke at the na- tional championships. Chena's Adam Fallis recorded his best times in the 100-metre freestyle and the 00-metre backstroke at the national youth championship. Meanwhile, four Chena swim- mers qualified for the Canada Cup international swim meet in Vancouver. Thompson recorded an im- pressive fourth in the finals of the 200-inetre breaststroke against in- ternational senior competition. He also placed fourth in the consola- tion) final in’ the 100-metre breaststroke. Other Chena swimmers who participated include fasen Gavac, 17, whe recorded a personal best in 100-metre backstroke; Faltis, who registered a personal best in the 50-meire freestyle; Marek He- jdak, 14, who posted best times in the 50-metre free, 100-metre free and 100-metre butterfly; and Suzanna Hajek, 15, with personal bests in the 100-metre backstroke, 100-metre freestyle, and 50-metre freestyle. At the Hyack Invitational Meet, Chena swimmers earned several medals, lead again by Thompson with gold medals in the 200- and 100-metres breaststroke. Gavac won silver medals in the 200- and 100-metre backstroke; Hajek won a silver in the 50-metre free and a bronze in the 100-metre freestyle: and the relay team, composed of Catherine Jolley. Meghan Hayter, Nadine Zarifeh and Ingrid McFee, took the gold medal in the 4° XN 50-metre freestyle.
