Behind its tourist-oriented facade, Grouse Mountain possesses the most compact and dramatic alpine traverse accessible from the North Shore. The Dam-Little Goat — Goat Mountain hike (1% to two hours each way) is a spectacular ridge run with surprise views of Ken- nedy Lake, in its deep crater, and Crown Mountain to the north. Recommended reading for any future hikes SUGGESTED READING for anyone interested in hiking the North Shore mountains includes 103 Hikes in South- western British Columbia and 109 Walks in British Colum- bia’s Lower Mainland. Both are by M. and D. Macaree, Douglas and MclIn- tyre, and cover many of the major North Shore hikes. Unfortunately, the definitive book, Roger and Ethel Freeman’s Exploring Vancouver's North Shore Mountains, which includes maps and very detailed descriptions of every trail and logging road, sold out quickly when originally published in 1985 and is still out of print. If- you plan to do much serious hiking on the North Shore, ransack used bookstores, beg the loan of a copy from a friend, or check the libraries and use the photocopier for relevant sec- tions. It is published by the Fed- eration of Mountain Clubs of .B.C., and a revised second edition has been . rumored for some time. It won’t be a minute too soon for exasperated booksellers who say they could move it by the crateload. The rolling contours of Thunderbird Ridge, running east from Dani Mountain to overlook Mit. Fromme, are also an attrac- tive picnic option where your Junch is bound to attract the piratical whisky jack grey jays. Intrepid and well-equipped hikers should still plan on a full day (eight to 10 hours) oa the trail to tackle the Hanes Loop Trail, feet (1,3 which descends from Goat Ridge into Crown Pass, then into Hanes Valley to link up with the Lynn Headwaters Trail, This route has been another thorn-in-the-harness for the North Shore Rescue Team: only fit, prepared early-risers should attempt it. Beyond, Strachan Mountain's 4,769-foot (1,454 m) height is ap- proached mostly via unattractively bald ski runs (no shade on a hot day), but pays back the persistent with in-your-face views of The Lions and dizzying vistas of Howe Sound. Black Mountain, also ascended mostly along Cypress Bow! ski runs, rewards the stubborn slogger with a network of very well main- tained hiking trails at the top, leading to several summits past three hidden alpine lakes. Cypress Bowl] is the southern terminus of the Howe Sound Crest Trail, now being extended as far as Deeks Lake — a marvelous multi-night expedition. The first leg makes for good day hiking as long as you keep an eye on your watch and the sun, and know when to turn around. The Howe Sound Crest Trail takes six hours to reach The Lions (one way) so if they. are your ob- jective, take the short cut up from Sunset Avenue in Lions Bay (four hours, one way). Easier hikes Appearances can be deceiving; despite the geography, not ali hik- ing on the North Shore involves lung- bursting, thigh-poppng elevation gains, Not only are most summits ac- cessible largely by car and air tram, but the canyon parks — Capilano Canyon and Lynn Can- yon/Lynn Headwaters -- offer endless kilometres of relatively ex- ertion-free forest walks well suited for family outings with small children. Lighthouse Park is another ca- thedral-like setting of fir. and cedar whose shaded paths make a perfect refuge from the sun and the city. The most unique trail system in the North Shore mountains is the Baden-Powell Trail, a 29-mile (47-kilometre) traverse that crosses the whole mini-range from Panorama Drive in Deep Cove to Black Mountain overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Because its distance is more lat- eral than vertical, though there are ups and downs, it’s an excellent hike for groups or individuals get- ting in shape or just looking for a good day in the woods.
