16 - Wednesday, March 3, 1999 — North Shore News north shore news , BUSINESS Investing your money globally IT’S hard to think of Canada as small. Yet you should consider that view in your invest- ing if you want to be truly diversified. Even if vou have never travelled to Europe or Asia (and perhaps not to the LS.3, you have certainly seen TV news and other programs dealing with those areas. The population and economic acuvity in those three parts of the world clearly dw. arf what goes on in Canada. You prob- ably plan to live in Canada. So vou might think it’s enough to invest in Canada’s term deposits or bonds, stocks (directly or through mutual funds) and property. However, even if you travel only to the U.S. or buy from U.S. mail order catalogues, you have done well financially you “invested” in a U.S. dollar account some years ago. Now take this a step fur- ther. Invest in companies based in countries whose economies are cither stronger money matters than or growin more than Canada’s. (Rementher, our stock markets represent only abour three per cent of the value of the world's stock markets.) Hf vou know enough about property markets abroad, vou could broaden your international porttolie even more. Once again, vou stand to make more money than keep: ing your money at home. or course, vou must balance the higher reward potential with the higher risks. You could reduce your profits or even lose money Hf the Canadian dollar gains against the foreign currencies involved, or if other problems arise with your “long-distance” investments. One of my favourite world-view reports is the Roval Bank Global Private Banking’s quarterly Duternaranal bavestiaent Outlook. The current review “of ccononic well-being around the world” shows Southeast Asia recovering while Germans, Haly Spain and France are growing. Scandinavia, the US. and UR. are slowing while Canada, Australia, Japan, Mesico and China are stabiliz- Ing. The report also reviews currencies (the Canadian dol- lar likely to gain on the US.) interest rates (trending lower Most areas} and equity mar kets (volatility). In other quarters, the report conipares countries by economic strength and other factors. You can sce the publi- cation at ewuwrovalbank com/eng- lish/epb>.
