orderline thought police WE KNOW that our Thought Police turn back books at the border or con- fiscate them for fear they will contaminate us. But now they’ve gone one fur- ther. For nine months, they managed to hold up a shipment of books from the U.S. that were already available here. The author of the subveisive work in question was psychology Professor Philippe Rushton of Western University, Ontario. The publishing house was Transaction Publications of New Jersey, and the book was called Race, Evolution and Behaviour, a Life History Perspective. The book is aimed mainly at the specialist but “race” must have been the trigger word. Pretty soon you won’t even be able to go to ‘ the races without a Thought Cop dogging you. Thanks to the usual pressure groups and our wonky politicians and bureaucrats we have become an international joke. Mary Curtis is executive vice- president of the American publish- ing house and says she has more trouble shipping books to Canada than to any other country in Europe or Asia. She was quoted in the Glabe & Mail as saying that this sort of thing could never happen in the U.S. “I don’t know what it is about your country,” she said. What it is about, dear lady, is ‘that we are governed. by idiots, incompetents, pokenoses. censors and pressure groups. Anything that isn’t squeaky-clean politically correct is likely to be sent to the dungeons or burned at the stake, like Australian Nigel Jackson's Doug Collins on the 1 other hand book on British historian David Irving. So-called liberals are like that. Customs and Excise must have a Watch List of “bad characters,” too, and Paul Fromm must be on it. ' He is an Ontario teacher who was removed from his high school job and — reports the Globe — transferred to adult education when Jewish groups complained about him. Fromm runs Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform (C-FAR}). He opposes waste in that field and dislikes our immigration mess. But his special sin was that he had given speeches to “right-wing groups.” Presumably, he would have been OK if he had given speeches to left-wing groups. He ordered five copies of Rushton’s book from the U.S. (C- FAR sells books) and had to wait nine months while Ottawa's deep thinkers wondered whether they should admit the shipment. In the meantime, he had ordered and received five more copies. The censors don’t even know whether they are going or com- ing. Rushton must also be on the Watch List. He was the target of the human rights crowd in Ontario after a paper of his on race and intelligence was pub- lished in the U.S. iss = OS Now, 29.95 avith Penozoil 10W20: iaaiaieiaia LAWYER 24 Years | Experience LONSDALE QUAY | NORTH VANCOUVER | 988-6321 RRSP Tip #5 Thinking of retiring early? His book has been favorably reviewed there, and Canada's strange ways noted, Among other things his research indicates that, on aver- age. Asians are more intelligent thal whites, and that whites are more inteHigent than blacks. 1 wouldn’t know, But if the Olympic Games are any guide, blacks can run faster than whites. So if they can be physically dif- ferent why can’t they also be mentally different? Rushton was hounded. Five years ago Premier David Peterson of Ontario demanded that the university fire him. The Ontario police “hate squad” investigated him for six months and university multicult students staged mini-riots. He had to deliver his lectures on closed-cir- cuit TV and the Ontario Human Wrongs Commission kept him on the griddle for years before drop- ping the case recently for lack of evidence. Meanwhile a Thought Policeman in Ottawa has stated that the fact that a book is avail- able in Canada does not affect the rules under which incoming mate- rial is screened. Wonderful. In the matter of hate literature, he added. “Customs officers have access to Justice Department lawyers.” One can just see all those gov- ermmmient brains searching piles of books for stuff that might upset someone. No wonder the Aincrican pub- lisher says she doesn’t want to come to Canada. She'd have less trouble in post-communist Russia. This farce was front page news in the Ortawa Citizen and got prominent coverage in the Globe. There has been nothing on it locally, except that Fromm was on Charles MacLean’s AM 1040 radio show Monday night. 4 Defieux-Saxelby Insurance Services Inc. 105-200 West Esplanade, N.
