Take the kids or call a babysitter? Take the kids. Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING IKE ITS Prairie pro- vince namesake, the Saskatchewan restau- rant carries on quietly filling the breadbaskets of hungry Canadians. The breadbaskets filled by the restaurant legacy from Expo 86's . Saskatchewan pavilion are now mostly those of North Shore resi- dents, which are as demanding as any across this great country. And the food served by the Saskatchewan — whose full name is long enough in itself to work up an appetite when repeated more than twice — remains the heavy belly- plugging fare that helped * tame a wild young Canada and continues to fuel the great human engine of this land from sea to shining sea: meat, mashed potatoes, gravy, a bit o veg, and a whopping helping of Mom's pie — a fa mode for the city folk. This is food to be dished out with big spoons upon big plates and tucked inte with sleeves rolled up over tattoos and calloused fingers tugging upon frayed - suspenders. No flambes, nouveaux cuisines . or heart-smart geegaws from this kitchen. It’s food the way-the Saskat- chewan has been doling it cut since it moved into the Park Royal South mall location after its suc- cessful stint at the equally suc- cessful Expo 86 fair. . The restaurant’s menu has re- mained as steady as Saskatchewan ' itself and as consistent as the fine of plates loaded and dispatched from the restaurant’s kitchen over the past five years. There are three main Saskat- chewan entrees: Fowl Supper ($10.95, for turkey with ail the trimmings); Roast Beef Dinner (also $10.95 and also with a whole lot of trimmings); and Perogies, NEWS photo Neil Lucente BANANARAMA...Liz Flanders (ieft) and Pasq Sepe present Lemon and Banana Meringue pies at West Vancouver’s Saskatchewan Restaurant. Cabbage Rolls and Kobassa (again $10.95, for a dinner that will wres- ile any appetite to the mat in three out of four falls). The above prices have risen $1 over the past five years. That's eoskatchewan Style. But it might not not be everybody’s style. Big food is, after all, not at the top of everyone's dining list. The Saskatchewan, therefore, provides those diners with less robust ap- petites an A !a Carte selection that ranges from Tossed Greens ($2.95) through Prairie Burger ($3.50) and on to Clubhouse Sandwich with salad ($5.95). But back to The Big Three. A recently sampled Perogies, beside two fist-sized cabbage rolls and two thick halves of slightly spicy Kobassa sausage. Sour cream was supplied for the perogies, which were tender and filling. The cabbage rolls, mean- while, were topped with stewed tomatoes and stuffed with ground meat, rice, onions and just the cight amount of savory spices. The combination provided solid internal fortification against the fast approaching winter.
