“We know already that people
want to be close to where they've
always tived,”” said Gilmour.

This familiar proximity allows

’ them to stay .close to family and
friends, as well as.the support
systems. and stores that they have
grown accustomed to.

She said many elderly people
don’t build friendships, adding
“social isolation is a very big

. problem in senior circles.’’

That isolation can spring from
mobility problems, but Gilmour

“They are more likely to socialize
in familiar surroundings.”

There is also a growing em-
phasis on keeping seniors in their
own homes and establishing ser-
vices that enable them to do this.

Safety is also high on the list of
important issues for seniors, al-
though many have learned to

‘adapt to their surroundings even

though there are elements to their
homes that cause dangers.

Some typical elements in hous-
ing design that cause problems
are:
® Stairs,

@®-+ cupboards that are out of
reach, and

@ bathroom doors that swing in
rather than out into the hall.

If someone collapses in a

bathroom, you cannot open the
door to get inside; the door must
be removed, explains Gilmour.

Designers are beginning to real-
ize these problems and are starting
to make design changes, although
she -pointed out that these design
elements should be used in all
housing since seniors donot nec-
essarily live in seniors complexes.

Some ‘of the things they need
are doorways wide enough for
wheelchairs, drawers instead of
low or high cupboards, safe hand
rails in hallways, showers rather
than bathtubs, and surfaces strong
enough to hold grab-bars.
