Te OPPOSED to the bacterial insecticide spray program proposed by Agriculture Canada to eradicate isolated Asian gypsy moth populations in the Greater Vancouver area largely base their opposition on instinct. Regardless of the side of the argument ere chooses to support concerning the re- ality of the threat posed by an Asian gypsy moth infestation, it is the notion of having something dropped on us from the skies that brings visceral discomfort. Hata may be found to back the efficacy _of the bacterial insecticide proposed for use. Conversely, information questioning the residual environmental effects caused by the substance is also available. The fact is moths have heen found in che area. The insect eats more than 400 different trees and shrubs. If established locaily, a moth infestation could lead to negative international trade consequences. If ‘established locally, raises the spectre of individuals resorting tu the use of all manner of pesticides available to control damage to plants on an infestation private property. Those truly concerned about human health risks skould stay indoors when the planes and helicopters take to the skies to do battle with the moth. TIDYING-UP chores today — starting with (what else?) the budget. Like you, I’d awaited it trembling. But when Glen Clark sat down, he ieft me feeling really happy sdbout all the things Iam NOT and do NOT. lam not a corporation. I am not a small business. I am not a GP billing Victoria more than $300,000 a year. I do not use law- yers. I do not get a supplemental homeowner grant. I do not have an income exceeding $60,000. Ja short, I’m a fiscal fax of over 90% of British Columbians. My extra $6 a month income tax is a drag, but 1 don’t have to pay it until next March — by which time I shall have won the 6/49. And J guess that extra 9.5% on booze is the least I can do to thank Glen for all the other bad things he could have done to me, but did NOT. A very negative budget, moan the 10% of critics. Agreed — and for me Mr. Clark’s negative thinking works fine, praise heaven! HOT UNDER THE COLLAR over Health Minister Elizabeth Cull’s edict forcing hospital boards to allow abortions, whether they like it or not, are the howling, placard-waving champi- ons of ‘local democracy.”” Just how ‘‘democratic’’ do they think hospital boards ARE — given that a hospital i is every bit as vital to the entire community it serves as police and fire protec- tion, sewers, roads and schools? Unlike councils and schoo! boards, however, hospital boards are NOT elected oy the communi- ty but by the paid-up membership of the hospital society — often **packed’" in advance by pressure groups. Sure, anyone else can join. But once you're charged even a nickel to vote, it’s no longer democracy. It’s pay-ocracy. SELLING HILLSIDE Schoo! to developers to raise cash for a needed new Caulfeild school has one little snag. The owners haven’t yet agreed. West Van School Board merely holds Hillside in trust for West Van taxpayers who bought the property in 1962. Some of them oppose the sale and want to keep the facility as a community centre. This would mean, of course, ei- ther raising $13 million for the Caulfeild school by further taxa- tion or simply doing without it. But at the very least it is the HITHER AND YON owners, not their temporary trust- ees, who are entitled to make such a choice — via a referendum. The school board is in the education business, not the real estate business. Property deal decisions prof- iting developers are the business - of the folks the property belongs to. West Van taxpayers don’t need any further ‘‘Taylor-Way-twin- towers”’ arrogance from their hired hands.
