8 ~ Sunday, December 1, 1991 - North Shore News MAILBO Violence won't end racism Dear Editor: I believe racism is a growing disease that has an enormous im- pact on people today. It doesn’t just. affect us as individuals but also affects society as a whole. This plague is sometimes uninten- lionally ignored by parents, think- ing that their children will follow the morals that were taught to them loug before. Racism is ali around us and it is affecting the way children think and, as a result, the future of the world. Do we really want our children to live their lives in hatred for one another? One example of racism is the story of Donald Marshall. Twelve years ago Marshall was convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to 19 years in prison without parole. After spending I1 years of his sentence in prison, a man came forward and confessed that he had conimitted the crime. Later it was found that lawyers and police had hidden evidence that could have proved Marshall's innocence. The man who had commited the murder, and took II years to confess, received five years in prison and the possibility of parote. Marshall was given $200,000 as Disguised dinosaur emissions Dear Editor: Re: Wednesday, Nov. 6 edition, Doug Collins’ column. Please reassure Mr. Collins that farting dinosaurs are still flourishing. Their antiquated, col- lective emissions are disguised as journalism under his name — with the same resulting value to mankind. Some people think violence can solve racism, | strongly betieve vi- olence is not, never was, and never will be a rational way of ending racism. If we stop looking at the color of a person's skin and look at what's inside, racism can be conquered. We all live our lives differently, but when it comes down to our basic needs we are all the same. Children do not understand rac- ism but adults should. Children must be protected from its effects.
