FE think this would he a wonderful thing for someone liv- ing alone in an apariment, but what can [ do about someone, like my aunt, who still lives in her own house? She is fiercely independent and hates the idea that someone would snoop on her, but her health is not pood and f am wor- ried about her. Answer: The Home Emergency Response Systen? would be perfect for someone tike your aunt. This system, part of North Shore Home Support Services (NSHSS), is designed to allow people to live independently as long as possible, with a feeling of safety and secu- rity. It is a passive, non-intrusive system which allows clients to get help quickly when necessary, without feeling that they are being watched. PARTICIPATE IN your com- munity. Volunteer! The requirement might be to send an ambulance. but ir could also be that the cient is just not feeling well and would like to have someone phone her daughter to come over. H the client cannot answer the phone, an ambulance is dispatched to his or her home. The ambulance personnel would have all the relevant medical in- formation in that client’s file. Besides the pendant there is also a home unit — about the size and shape of a box of tissues — which attaches to a phone jack and is usually situated next to the client’s bed. This unit has a red help but- ton which, when activated, works in the same way as a squeeze of the pendant. The home unit has a reset but- ton, colored black, which must be pressed once each morning and once each evening. If the button is not pressed and the staff person monitoring the system cannot get an answer on the telephone, they will contact friends, neighbors or relatives of the client who have 10-year-olds.
