Dear Sditor: 1 can think of many reasons for becoming a volunteer. If we spent even a small amount of time giv- ing freely of ourselves, rather than continuously wondering what it is we could be doing for ourselves, maybe the world wouldn't be in its present state. { was too concerned only with my own life and involved myself in things that suited me. But, after the birth of my daughter [ turned my thoughts of becoming a volun- teer into reality. I called Dru Dunshee, volunteer coordinator at North Shore Community Services, and she put me in touch with Jenny Leeth, the volunteer liaison at Beacon Hill Lodge in West Vancouver. Leeth placed me (a_ single mother), my daughter and our dog with a woman named Doris. When we first met Doris she was extremely withdrawn, had very low self-esteem, refused to get in- volved in any activities or social functions and rarely engaged in Wednesday, April 24, 1991 - North Shore News - 7 | MAILBOX Volunteering brings its own rewards casual conversation. In the short time we have known Doris, there has been a vast improvement in her. She will now initiate conversa- tion, not only with me, but with the other residents and staff at Beacon Hill. She looks forward to our outings and is interested in involving herself with certain things. But the best thing of all is that Doris is laughing and smiling again. This transition happened because one human being cared enough to share some time with another. By telling you my experience, | hope to inspire others to reach out, take that first step and join the gratifying world of volun- teering. Fantasy Garden buyers were not Taiwanese Dear Editor: Ever since the news of the sale of Fantasy Gardens was reteased, readers, reporters and editors are making the same mistake. I would like to point ot that the purchasers are not Taiwanese. They are Chinese cverseas who were born, raised, educated, and do business in a south-east Asian country. About 10 to 15 years ago, they went to Taiwan to set up their businesses in that island. They have houses all over the world. They are not Taiwanese. i would also like to suggest that whenever reporters, writers, and editors want to classify those peo- ple into ‘“Taiwanese,”” or cven **Taiwanese gent’’ like Mr. Doug Collins did in his article of Apri! 10, they had better dig deeply and Alano Club thanks ail participants in series Dear Editor: I would like to thank all those North Shore professionals in the health care, counselling, education and treatment fields who gener- ously shared their expertise during our recent 10-part lecture series on substance abuse issues. Thanks must also go to the North Shore News for helping to publicize the weekly Sectures so well, and to Troy Music and Custom Color for helping to defray the cost of our equipment. On behalf of the board of directors, the volunteers, and myself, thank you all for your support. Valerie Byers, Coordinator Alano Club of the North Shore wisely into the background of those people. The facts about what those people have been doing in Taiwan these years, and what Taiwanese people think about them, have not been reported fairly yet. Finally, a small suggestion to that ‘‘gent,’? Mr. Doug Collins, you had better go back to study more information before publishing any of your articles.
